Wheel Spacers Advice

Featured Replies

I'm toying with the idea of throwing some wheel spacers onto my Superb. Currently the alloys just don't fill the arch quite as much as I'd like on 17'' alloys, but I'm reluctant to go for 18'' or 19'' because the price of rubber climbs rapidly.

So I have a couple of questions for anyone with experience of them. Basically looking for any pros and cons I guess. Also when you check out wheel spacer sizes they're normally 10mm, 15mm or 20mm (although I did find someone with 140mm spacers!) and those sizes seem quite a small adjustment, do they really make that much of a difference to look? Wondering what size to go for really. Would be interested to see an example on a Superb.

Cheers guys.

15mm spacers on the rear of my octy massively improved the look. 15mm was a little too much on the front though for my tastes. For Superb specific spacer advice, talk to baker21.

Yeah I know Baker is running them, not sure if anyone else is though. Have your spacers had any effect on ride at all?

Certainly no discernible negative effect. If anything, very slightly more stable at speed.

Their are a few issues worth considering when using wheel spacers.

They will put additional forces on wheel bearings due to the extended leverage and may reduce bearing and other steering component life.

They will effectively reduce the stiffness of the suspension because of the additional leverage giving a softer ride.

The ark of travel that the wheel travels from full bump to full drop will be increased.

They will cause some handling problems, with an increased tendency to white line and squirm with any road imperfections which might cause the steering to wander.

Obviously it depends on what thickness of spacer is used as to how big an effective change will take place but it is worth thinking about. Everything has consequences.

I fitted 10mm Forge motorsport wheel spacers on my mk1 octavia vRS as I needed the alloys to clear the Porsche calipers.

One thing to note If you do decide to get some wheel spacers, make sure they are hubcentric.

That's a very Zen way of looking at things. :smirk: Cheers for the info, almost puts you off spacers huh? I was thinking of going for 15mm.

Yeah will do. I knew they came either hubcentric or bolt-ons. Not entirely sure how the bolt-ons work (guess there's a clue in the name). I was going to go for hubcentrics from what I've read around here.

Cheers for the replies fellas.

One thing I meant to ask originally was, does anyone know what taper angle the bolts have on a Superb? You need longer bolts and often you need to stipulate the taper angle.

Zen is not trying to put you off just consider what will happen.

Running spacers will need some thought of course but if your a 'modder' then it's not a problem........

You will need to work out the offset of your wheels and then work out what spacer you can fit on both and rear........

I can tell you that I can run both 15mm and 20mm on the rear of the Superb with the Solids and also up to 15mm on the front............

On my 19's I only need to run 15mm on the front as the rear's are so wide it's not needed, so make sure you think about the offest and wheel width.....

There is usually only Tapered or Rounded bolts and you will only be able to use one or the other, Superb bolts are tapered and as stated always use Hubcentric spacers or you will suffer some 'wheel wobble, I have noticed nothing but an improvement running spacers but then it's difficult to judge when your car is on the floor.......... :giggle:

(As far as I remember you can only source a minimum of 10mm Hubcentric spacers for the Superb)

Cheers for the info, was about to click the "thanks" button, only to realise it's no longer there.

That's me buggered then I'm not a modder. More of a sad little man with nothing else to spend time on.

As for the bolts, I've seen companies offering 40degree tapered bolts and 60degree tapers. Why can I see me later wheel brace in one hand and protractor in the other?

I'll try to work out the offset and widths. If I get confused at all expect a pm heading your way ... feel free to ignore it if you like.

No worries mate, always try to reply to PM's, all depends on how busy I am at work..............

if they're right size get something like the H&R DRA spacers, they bolt onto the hub (with supplied bolts) and then have threaded holes for your original wheel bolts. they're also hubcentric

Well I did it. Would have gone for 20mm but they're pretty expensive. Got a good price on 15mms so went for those instead. Pics if you click on my sig, although to be fair the pics are nothing special, I mean how bad do you really want to check out someone else's wheel spacers.

Cheers for the info.

It does look tidier with those 15mm Spacers on. I keep wanting to do your boot interior light mod as well, will see if there are any cathode lights I can blag off someone :D

Blag them off of this guy .... for £6 delivered. Shouldn't really break the bank and I have to be honest it does make finding stuff in the boot at night a whole lot easier.

TIME TO ORDER! :) Thanks

No worries. Just so you know I actually fitted two sets ... so four tubes in total. But my boot is pretty bright, you may well be fine with just two tubes, just make sure you place then somewhere central in the boot.

Spacers look good mate

I may go for a set of those myself as I really like the look of the 17's on my L&K, where did you get them from?

You have a PM

To be fair none of the pictures in that gallery thing have the spacers showing, except for the two titled "spacers front" and "spacers rear". I really should update them older ones sometime.

A word of warning, make sure you get the correct bolt lengths and type. The standard Superb bolts have a 25mm thread on them. So if you're going for 15mm spacers you need 40mm threads (25mm+15mm=40mm). Similarly if you're going for 10mm spacers you'd need 35mm threads.

Get the bolts too short and they're unsafe as they don't hold the tyres on well enough. Get them too long and they poke through the hub and your car isn't moving anywhere and damage can ensue.

My advice, remove a single bolt before ordering, measure the thread length (from the base of the collar to the end of the thread) just to double check beforehand.

Also dependent on your alloys you'll have either radius or tapered bolts. Easy to tell which by looking right under the bolt head .... if it's domed it's a radius type, whereas if it looks coned it's a tapered type.
