Too much chrome on the grill for me - anyone else painted these?`

Featured Replies

Before I pick my vRS up next week, I am keen to get prepped for a few things - one I am looking to do is paint the chrome on the grill black (same colour as the car), but has anyone done this already and how did it look? Never done this before so any advice on how to prep this for painting or am I better getting someone else to do it for me?

Cheers,

Andy

i dont actually like that one to be honest. i think it look strange without the badge. ill see if i can find some pics of cars with the badge still on, but the chrome removed and resprayed the body colour. they look better in my opinion

Hehe thank you both - looks so much better just colour coding the current one! Guessing it is better to get someone to do this for me? No idea if its possible to do it out of a tin (am guessing not!) :)

I did mine myself, but will probably need redoing sometime. You need to key the chrome so that it will take some zinc oxide primer, then top coat to match the car. I didn't laquer mine when I did it as the temperature was too low, and the laquer just made it look cloudy. The other option is to take to a bodyshop and pay them probably £50-£60 to do it for you.

If I do redo it I might even go for a matt finish to see what it looks like :o

body shop quoted me 60 quid if i took it off for him and delivered and colllected it. was sorely tempted but ended up buying an intake instead

I have matt black kidney grills in my 525d and on a dark titanium grey, they do look very nice! Tempted to try it and worst case, take it to a body shop to finish off :D

Im thinking of one of these for the A4 :) black or maybe anthracite wheels to match

I actually used a heavy duty sandpaper to key the chrome without removing it then working my way to a finer grit. (Looked like brushed aluminium in the end)

A few coats of clear etching primer, followed by a few coats of primer/paint and clearcoat with sanding inbetween and after with some polishing.

It felt rather solid, its just a shame my painting skills aren't the best.

I have a complete mk2 vrs grille for sale if you're interested. Keep your chrome one for when you sell the car again! Genuine skoda part includes outer chrome, black slatted part and vrs badge. Mine was diy colour coded which chipped, so it could do with a professional respray. It is in the for sale section too! Cheers neebsta

@Brimma

Wow, that black one looks so cool....is that yours?

Is this for a FL vRS or pre FL, personally I think the FL grills with more chrome are better and don't need this treatment?

Pre FL I am led to believe :) I just don't like Chrome!

My FL vRS hatchback will be Race Blue with a 20mm Eibach drop, tinted rear windows and colour coded grill. All things IMO that should of been fitted in the factory! Also thinking about slightly darker wheels, but not sure on that, probably suit my Leon better than a larger car
