another startup squeak

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a 2004 octavia VRS, and have noticed over the last few startups from cold a strange squeaky/metal noise coming from the belt driven area. This sound gradually gets quieter until it is not noticeable. if you leave it to idle. (after about a minute or so)

I know this sounds vague but I am struggling to explain this noise (from what I have read I don’t think this is down to the secondary air pump as it doesn’t sound like a leaky vacuum,or like a blowing exhaust) It almost sounds like the one of the units attached to the belt is faulty, but once warmed up it is ok.

This only appears to happen if I leave it for more than a day or so. For example i didn't start it yesterday but when i started up this morning (very cold outside)it made the noise, then I drove it for half an hour left it all day (whilst at work) When i started it from cold this evening there was no noise at all.

Any ideas? or should i book it in to the garage?

Cheers....

Check your alternator belt area, (things like alternator, belt, pulleys), they can squeak and then when they free up they stop, you can spray a small ammount of wd40 onto the belt to see if it quietens down. if it does you know its related to those items.

then you can narrow it down further when it comes back or checking for bearing vibrations with a screwdriver pressed against the casings of each component.

hi the gas ram that tensions the cambelt can rattle on the tensioner pully it can stick after the cambelt has been done (thats if you have just had the cambelt done)
