1.8T and VRS front pads!?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to see if any of you guys know if the pads for the golf GTI are the same as the VRS?

The reason im asking this is because ive got 2 cars with VRS/TT front brakes!

One of the cars has Skoda VRS pads on it and the other has pads that VW say come form a MK4 GTI thats they say are the same part number as an RS

But the thing is both my cars stop completely different with the RS pads being much better when cold and hot than the GTI ones

As im sure you guys are aware the caliper on the RS is the same as the 1.8T the golf gti etc regardless of which disc it has fitted either the 288mm or the 312mm so what Vw are saying is that all the pads hare the same, but there is a clear deiffernce between the VRS pads and the GTI ones.

The issue is im not happy with the VW pads and as i was told on purchase they are the same as the VRS ive tried returning them but to no avail!

can anyone shed any light on this as i believe the git has the same pad as the 1.8T and the VRs are unique.

are you running the same discs on both cars?? as this will have an effect

also what cars are they as if one is a large car like the vrs one is a small car they will react different

not to sure if the pad is the same would have thought so as they are the same calipers...

havent been much help i know lol

Far as I know the calipers are NOT the same. A friend with a mk4 gti has been looking for over a year for calipers to hold 312mm discs with no luck, his ones are too small.

As long as the MK4 GTi in question isn't a 2.0, then the pads will be the same on the Octy vRS and the Golf.

Pretty sure the calipers are different on a Mk IV Golf. Aren't they the same as the 1.8T Octavia? So 288mm discs?

I fitted vRS calipers to my 1.8T Octavia to accomodate the 312mm discs. It may just be a case of different carriers though. Someone wil be along to confirm hopefully.

As for the pads, have you bedded them in properly? They need a gentle braking period before you start hitting them hard. Also, as westallc says, the discs will make a difference. Did you put new pads on old discs? Either way, it will always feel different with new bits.

I've just uprated my rear cailpers to the vRS ones and put new 256mm discs and pads on and now the front doesn't feel as sharp. Might be the back coming into play more so fronts have eased a bit. :S

I'm looking at them this weekend to try and work it out because it's bugging me as well :(

Hope you get them sorted

The calipers are the same to make a car fitted with 288mm discs into the VRS/TT 312mm all you need is the aditional carrier to move the disc out, which ive done on both my cars!

I know the gti , tt, vrs, 1.8t and so on and so on all have the same caliper with the same size thickness and so on and so forth pad size but im sure the compound is different for the VRS as oppossed to the other!

Sorry, mis read your OP. The part numbers for both are the same so will be the same compound regardless of where you get them Skoda or VW dealers. You would get different compounds from after market pads mintex or textar for example.

Just spoken yto yet another VW dealer!

And im told that all the cars with the 288mm and 312mm discs use the same pad number 1JO 698 151M, which include the golf, TT, Bora and so on so it must be right!!!
