freezing door locks

Featured Replies

Got a wee query. Went out to the car today and jumped into the passenger side to get into the glovebox and when i went to shut the door the door wouldn't close,it just bounced back off the door frame. After closer inspection, the lock itself in the side of the door was up as if the handle wasn't pulling the catch back. Not just the front pass door the rear pass door done the same a couple days back but not to the same extent.

Is this a common repair to the mk2 octy or is it just due to the freezing weather conditions we are experiencing especially up here in lanarkshire scotland. Minus 15 last nite was the scale on the thermometer.

Get the WD40 out and give the locks a good spray, my drivers door lock was full of salt the WD cleared it

No probs, just spray and try to get the thin straw that sometimes comes with it inside the lock wait a few mins then work the key in and out and locking and unlocking the car a good few times

open the doors and Do all the locks while your at it, and pull the door handles out and spray there as well

Got another problem now. The passenger side door won't shut after being opened. It just bounces off the body when you try to close it. Worked it out to 2 possible problems......

1. The door locking mechanism is stuffed as i have to manually push the black catch down.

2. Electrical problem.

As you know the weather has been a big problem recently so would moisture in the door itself cause the locking mechanism to freeze? I have applied WD40 and 3-1 oil to the catches to stop the seizure but to no avail it seems. The driver door stuck shut the other night and wouldn't open from either inside or out. It is opening and closing the now but i have no hope that it won't do the same as te passenger door tonight.

So would Skoda replace these locking mechanisms under warranty or would it be a personal cost to fix?

Any suggestions would be much sought after as its doing my head in.

Is the passanger side of your car more exposed to the elements ?? You seem to be only having trouble on the passenger side.

A WORD OF WARNING HERE!!!!!

I've had exactly the same problems on the Leon over the last couple of days, and in exactly the same way, threads have appeared on the seatcupra.net forum about this very thing.

After the (weak) winter sun shone onto the door for 10 minutes, it did free itself, but it has been suggested on the Seat forum that as well as spraying WD40 onto the handle and key opening, take out the black plastic plug on the edge of the door near the lock. If you look into this hole, there is a screw which is the key lock (or blanking plate) retainer, and by spraying WD40 into the hole, you can get to parts of the lock and barrel that you can't get to from the outside of the door panel. I've done this to all the doors on the Octavia and Leon now, and so far no more freezing up problems.

One vitally important point here. WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT HEAT UP THE DOOR/IGNITION KEY WITH A LIGHTER ETC AND THEN INSERT INTO THE LOCK. IF THE LOCK IS FROZEN, THE SUDDEN EXPANSION CAN DO ONE OR BOTH OF TWO THINGS -- DESTROY THE LOCK BARREL AS IT RAPIDLY EXPANDS, OR SNAP THE KEY IN THE LOCK AS THE KEY CONTRACTS AGAIN!!!!

This happened to me on an old Astra, and cost me a new lock and key. You have been warned!!!!!!!!

Hope this helps

Mike

cheers mike. I managed to get hold of a can of WD40 and some oil and sprayed the hell out of the locks and so far not bad. However the passenger door lock still seems to not want to let the door shut at times and a quick adjustment with my finger by pushing the lock manually down into the door helps. I will be looking at it proper tomorrow again in the daylight and if need be will spray some more WD into it. I thought i was the only one with this problem mike but it seems i was wrong.

Cheers william

Graphite lubricating spray might be better for a lock once you have managed to clear the dirt off it, or something like GT85 with PTFE in it.

Cheers for the advice. Well the door lock on the passenger side is proper knackered. Had it at skoda today and they have ordered another lock for me under warranty. The driver door seems fine now (touch wood) but if it goes too it will be getting done under warranty.

Cheers the advice guys much appreciated.
