Nokian WR and WR-G2 thoughts

Featured Replies

What are peoples thoughts of the WR and WR-g2 in this weather.

I came back along the M27 today and didn't have any issues in the snow. Only time things were a bit slippery was turning onto a real back road, which turned very icy pretty quickly.

So are you pleased, displeased and how do you rate them compared to other winter tyres you've run?

still waiting for mine. Ordered them on 20 Dec from mytyres.co.uk and they are due here on 13 Jan. :'(

I am interested in these as well. My father is going to order some winter/all season tyres for his Subaru. He has the choice of Vredestein Quatrac 3 (or even Wintrac Extreams) which he was going to buy as the solid outer shoulder will be good for fast cornering in the dry. We have been impressed with the Quatrac 2s on my mothers Furby. He was looking on MyTyres for these, he saw those two Nokians, He is now very temped with the WR-G2s.

Has any got any experience with those Vred Quatracs or the Nokians?

He looked on Camskill and for his size (205/50 16) the Wintracs are due in Feb 2010 and Toyo snow Tyres in Oct 2010. :o :(

I'm running a couple of WR on the front and WR-G2 on the rear and I'm pleased with them. As i said elsewhere, packed ice is not nice, but not much other than studded tyres will help there.

Sorry if I confused people with the thread, as I was just seeking other peoples opinions as to how they think they compare.

I've got 4 * WR on my car, pulled away on a road a couple of days ago that I could barely walk on, no probs at all. I actually put my foot down slightly to test them and barely slipped at all :)

I take it that was on ice?

Near enough, yes, it was highly compacted "polished" snow. I had shoes on which didn't help, but I still think it was a challenging bit of road. Other cars might have been ok to get by slowly, but I pulled away easily and quickly, might as well have been a normal(ish) road :p

Good to know, I have to say ice can still be a bit tricky to stop on, but some grip is a lot better than none.

Yes, they are much better than summer tyres (at least, they seem to be so, without having summer tyres to test under the exact same conditions...), but I don't expect miracles!

Well a small amount of slippage on wet, polished ice but the TCS handled that (as did I by lifting off too) and the car gripped and was moving fine.

oops, sorry I forgot I said I'd post feedback on the WRG2s when they arrived.

They arrived on Friday night and on Staurday I had to go over to my parents about 12 miles away over some winding back roads. Without thinking too much I went my usual route instead of one that was more likely to have been cleared. anyway I found myself on a twisty wee back road that clearly hadn't been ploughed far less gritted since he snow started back in Mid December.

Turned off the ESP and....well I just cruised along as though I was on tarmac rather than soft snow on a base of hard packed snow. There hadn't been too much traffic so there was no real rutting to speak of, just a slight track through the snow.

I was plain gobsmacked by how sure footed the car was. Thankfully it means I can even get out of the street without faffing about rocking the car back and forth like I had to do last week.

Big thumbs up for the Nokians!

For some further feedback, yesterday I went into the office and had no choice but to park on some fairly thick snow, that had been partly compacted, but not down to ice.

I came out about 7 hours later, to find that the central area where I would be driving up a small slope was an icy base, with a slushy/snowy mix on top, which didn't look ideal to be driving on.

Anyway, I'd timed it so my work colleagues and I had left at the same time as they were parked near me, albeit in an Audi TT with quattro, so he was confident of getting out.

Colleagues looked at the tyre on mine, knowing they were winters, one saying they don't look very aggressive, the other saying i'd get stuck on the slope, so they'd wait to give a push if needed.

Obviously that didn't help my confidence, but sure enough I drove away without any problems and made it out of the car park, where other cars were slipping around (The audi also made it out fine).

Anyway long story short, the guy I was talking to said he was amazed I got out, as his car would have been properly stuck and spinning it's wheels, where as I just drove off as if I was on tarmac.

Nice to know it isn't just the sometimes blinding "I've paid for them so they must be better" train of thought and they are actually helping :)

I went for an interview last week at a company, their carpark was 5-6" deep with snow. I drove in and back out with absolutely no issue at all.

I guess this is why it's hard to guage how good they are being for me, I don't know what things would have been like on summer tyres. But I'm confident I'd have had a little more excitement getting out. Whereas I just drove out like there was nothing unusual about the weather at all... it might as well have been deep puddles in April!

"Sadly", I don't think I've come anywhere near their limits yet this season, and that includes the hard-packed snow I talked of earlier!
