Read The great diverter diverter valve face-off here for more information. You need a recirculating diverter valve for the 1.8T. Just to confuse matters slightly, the OEM part is called a cut-off valve.

a blow off valve and dump valve are the same thing in principal and wont run properly on the VAG 1.8T engine. there is a kit available but apparently it doesnt work once the car is remapped (something to do with over boost or something IIRC)

a recirc valve (whic does work) basically does the same thing as the dump valve but instead of "dumping" the air to the atmosphere it recirc's the air back into the airbox.
