Tyre Pressures in Freezing Conditions

Featured Replies

What is the general concensus on tyre pressures for this weather we are having? My summer tyre pressures are at 220kPa at around 20degrees C. In this weather unless I put more air in they would drop to around 180 - which is a hell of a lot. Obviously one should always check tyre pressures cold and inflate to the recommended. In these extreme conditions is it best to run a little lower than usual to allow more rubber contact with the road/snow/ice surface to try to maximise grip? Obviously one would not normally do this but in these conditions one would not be driving at high speeds. I'm inflating mine to around 210kPa at the moment. Just wondering what others are doing/experiencing?

Tyres should be within manufacturers guidelines. for all season driving, do not lower them for winter driving as handling problems may incur which could lead to an incident, it is also unlawful to have markedly different pressures tan the guidelines suggest. Obviously if tyres are set ant more reasonable temperatures they will record a lower value when the temperature has dropped and increase as the temperature gains, this is quite normal.

IIRC the winter tyre manufacturers say the pressure should be about 2PSI above the normal pressures given on the summer tyres.
