FL Scout Protection

Featured Replies

What is the level of underbody protection currently standard on the Octavia Scout? Is it cosmetic or does it seem to have purpose to it? Also does anyone know if the FL Scout has different fron seats to pre face lift? Local dealer says no but Skoda Customer Services says yes? Thinking of ordering Scout before VAT free deal ends seems far better car for the money than a YETI(wait for abuse)

Many thanks

Loskie

The silver bits under the bumpers are painted plastic.

but it does benefit from an aluminum sump guard (plastic on the 4x4).

Thanks.

I had a pretty heavy duty steel sump guard fitted to my Mk1 Octavia. Took the knocks no problem but did reduce ground clearance a bit. Is there a rough road pack available for the Octavia Scout? Or does the aluminum sump guard constitute a rough road pack?

My build codes include:

2UB = Rough-road design

There is no option per se though.

My Yeti has the same code 2UB but I don't think this is an indication of a rough road pack (option on Yeti SE & Elegance), as another SMOC member also has this code but I'm 99% sure he's not got the rough road pack like I have on mine.

Yeti Rough road pack - steel engine under-tray (replacing plastic), heavy gauge plastic floor-pan covers and rear axle beam shields.

Hi Loskie,

no abuse from this part of the SMOC the Scout is a fantastic motor, was considering an ex demo when they first arrived but the wife's not keen on combi's.

My advise though would be to go for the 1.8TSI not the 140PD. If you really wanted diesel I would seriously consider waiting for the 140CR later this year; a far better motor.

I do approx 25000m a year and prefer the torque of the derv engine. Do a bit of towing as well. Did not know current Scout engine was not CR. When does it change from PD to CR?

Read on the German forum June this year after the Superb has switched in March.

Is it? Seems a bit more solid than aluminium to me whenever I've tapped it with my knuckle, though I guess it might just be a thick piece (for aluminium). It's certainly a substantial thing having caught it a few times without any visible deformation of any kind.

In addition to the sump guard (which does not extend below the natural vehicle line) you get plastic guards running down the right and left of the car covering the brake lines, etc. They do have some little "kickers" half way down (one on each side) which I think are for directing road spray back to the road or something. I have had to replace one of these. But still, better that than damaging the car!

The few ground scrapes I have had have been caused by inopportune suspension compression rather than tackling obstacles that are bigger than the ground clearance! Which is quite annoying given that each time I was going gentle, but obviously not gentle enough!

Niall

I have never been down on all fours to check it out. I was going on the brochure description, but my recollection of that may even be hazy today.

I always wondered what the little hanging triangle things were.

Snag Hazard?! ;)

The Yeti's under-tray is defiantly steel, checked it out with a magnet.

Not looked under the Scout but the off-road floor pan covers on the Yeti are noticeably thicker than those I have seen on my previous VAG cars.

I think you'll find that the "sump guard" is only plastic if it's petrol powered (not sure if the same applies to the Scout). Diesel versions get a pukka cast sumpguard as well as the anti-snag underbody trays running the length of the car.

The dilemma is whether to take the VAT now or hope that the offer is either further extended or replaced to allow a June build date. After driving a Fabia vRS, I took the Scout for a spin back to Dumfries via 7 bends and Dalbeattie, and I was suitably impressed. It seemed sprightly enough, and if anything I find the PD engine reassuring in an "agricultural = dependable" sort of way. Mine's being built this week, so I'm hoping for more snow to play around in when it is delivered. By contrast, I've driven a 3.0 A6 Allroad in the snow, and it feels just too easy and effortless - and there's no fun in that.

Are you sure? What is the logic behind that? Is it assumed that petrol Scouts are bought for looks whilst the diesel ones for off road ability?

Steve

Its to do with engine cooling.

Petrol Scouts do not get the same underbody protection as the equivalent diesel - I am assuming petrols run hotter?

The Scout gets more protection than the standard 4x4, metal rather than plastic too.

Jeeves.

How do/did you find the seats in the Scout? I spoke to a salesman at Deans who said they hadn't been upgraded with the facelift version however Skoda Customer Services said they had. I've never felt Deans particularly welcoming and friendly since they changed hands 7 or so years ago. Indeed i felt they screwed my retired father over when he bought brand new off them at full list and were not even decent enough to put in enough fuel to get him home to CD.

I would share your dilemma too re the VAT free if I could decide between a Scout Tdi and Forester Boxer Diesel. If the seats in the Scout were right it would be ideal for me. I'm in Brig o dee by the way.

If I were you, I wouldn't darken their door again!

In all honesty I've found them to be really helpful and have bought both my cars off John Armitage. OK, so no great deal on the Fabia as it was about the last of their allocation of vRS LEs, but got a great PX on it for the Scout. Haven't had to sign forms when taking a car for a test drive etc. so a good rapport. The Scout I took out was pre FL so can't really say anything about the seats other than they always look narrow and long compared to other VW group cars, but not uncomfortable or a problem for me. Alcantara seats are fantastic, but way too pricey and not very child/chocolate friendly.

Got a feeling that Clarkson wasn't very complimentary about the diesel engines in Subarus despite liking the Outback. I'll ask my neighbour about his Forester when I next see him. I'm on the same exchange as you, but stay the other side of Rhonehouse.
