CLUTCH PEDAL

Featured Replies

hello

can anyone tell me why sometimes my clutch pedal once pushed to the floor doesnt return to the top propley it only goes half way ,you have to put your foot under the pedal to lift it up.

it only does it every now and again,

hopefully someone know whats going on

thanks

Check the hydraulic fluid level.

If it's not that, it's probably the clutch slave cylinder.

I use to have the same problem in a Porshe 944. You need to rebuild the clutch slave cylinder. Inside this part, goes a piston with some round rubber seals around this piston. Does rubber seals got worn

I am prety sure you can find a rebuild kit for your clutch slave cylinder. Check the price for the rebuild kit and the price for a new clutch slave cylinder. Some times since the price is similar, is better to get it new.

Good luck,

Isaac

i also have this, very very rarely tho, and it only ever happens once at a time

I have this too, mainly when It cold. It disapears when everything gets warm.

Used to have this problem when I had my first VRS, only happened on a few occasions when slow speed driving around an estate doing alot of stop/starts.

thanks for your comments ill look to get the slave cylinder done, will it get worse or will it pack up altogether or is it something i need to get done asap,

as i said i doesnt do it all the time mainly when cold and driving around the estate as like the other members, would bleeding the system help?

See Turbo_boss's response above; if the problem is the slave cylinder, it's wear in the seals he mentions, and can only get worse. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydraulic_cylinder#Parts_of_a_hydraulic_cylinder for a full explanation of how hydraulic rams (eg hydraulic clutch master and slave cylinders, brake master cylinders, calipers and wheel cylinders) are constructed. In the illustration in the paragraph ""welded Body Cylinders, the seal would fit into the outside groove in the piston end (component coloured red, at left of picture). If we're right, what has happened is that the seal has worn, and is allowing hydraulic fluid to leak past the piston into the LH end of the cylinder. Eventually, the clutch will start to engage by itself, if you make a habi of sitting with your foot on the clutch and the car in gear.

The slave cylinder looks like a piece of piddle to change on the 02J 5-speed gearbox. Just sits on top of the gearbox held in with 2 bolts.

GSF sell a FAG slave cyclinder for £25. So I'd say get it changed and bleed the system through.

I got a replacement slave cylinder from VW and fitted it :-)

Nice one! It was easy right?

Even the master cylinder looks pretty easy to change from inside the footwell.
