MOT failure figures are revealed

Featured Replies

I've just been following this article from the BBC: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8456116.stm

For ease of presentation, years, followed by vehicles that passed MOT for Fabia I

Year Number MOTs passed

1999 1

2000 8,162

2001 17,944

2002 18,347

2003 16,600

2004 14,947

2005 291

2006 4

Year Number MOTs failed

1999 1 2

2000 3,458

2001 6,088

2002 4,970

2003 3,637

2004 2,632

2005 45

2006 6

I'm suprised by the numbers, why only 291 MOTs in 2005?

Perhaps I am misreading the data... anyway, check it out, there is a section in the Excel sheet for Octavia too :-)

Quote from the article "The data relates to MOT tests carried out in 2007 and is available on the VOSA website as a PDF document consisting of 1,200 pages"

So, 291 2005 registered cars passed an MOT in 2007 and 4 2006 registered cars passed an MOT in 2007. Seeing as an MOT isn't needed until a car is three years old I don't think it's too suprising that very few one or two year old cars were MOT'd

I'll reword my question... why would an owner of a 2005 Fabia need to MOT their car in 2007?

formatting screwed up sorry!

There's something wrong with the data, or it's been filtered incorrectly. I can't see how 8,162 Fabias were MoT'd in 2000. None of the cars would have been old enough to warrant an MoT, let along more than 8,000 of them!

I'll reword my question... why would an owner of a 2005 Fabia need to MOT their car in 2007?

Strictly speaking they wouldn't need to, but some private buyers like to MOT a car they're thinking about buying regardless of whether it is due or not. It's a relatively cheap way to see if the car is roadworthy or has any faults.

I think it means that 8,162 2000 registered cars were MOT'd in 2007 (my earlier post quotes that this data relates to cars MOT'd in 2007)

This makes my head hurt :dull:

You seem to be misreading. all the data is for cars mot'd in 2007! The year represents the year the car was registered surely. Maybe some people took the mot even though they didn't need to as a safety precaution?

Whats interesting is that there seems to be a Fabia registered in 1999 , which would make it the oldest Fabia on the road? Or am I reading that wrong too? :S

Thanks for clarifying that - it makes lots of sense! :-)

Perhaps these were really early models, Skoda produced the car in 1999: http://new.skoda-auto.com/COM/model/olders/models/Pages/Fabia.aspx

Yeah I knew the Fabia first came out in 1999 in Europe , but the UK launch was in the first week of March 2000 and private customers couldn't get one till then. Mine is a V plate but was a Dealer Demo , registered in Feburary 2000 (the 29th!!). Im guessing that any 1999 regd Fabia was a UK press fleet car?
