Great forum, looking at a Yeti for early next yr

Featured Replies

Hi, been lurking for a few days reading up on the Yeti - very interesting discussions and some great information.

Currently driving a LR Discovery 3 (raised air intake, sump guard and AT tyres) and will be looking to downsize at the end of the year... I know a while yet ;)

We do a lot of off road driving and have been having great fun in the snow recently... but off road is really just for fun TBH, not really essential. Ability in inclement weather is essential though.

I do however want the capability to be able to get home through flood and snow which is where the Disco comes into its own over other less capable vehicles. Its saved me many times having to give up - she just keeps on pulling through anything.

We just ordered a Skoda Fabia and while at the dealer in Bridgnorth (excellent people I must say) I saw the Yeti in metallic dark grey (same as the Disco) and I was mightily impressed with its build quality and looks. Considering it was only 'S' spec, it was very well kitted out.

What I am slightly concerned about though is the Yeti's off road capability, are there more aggressive tyres available for the 17" wheels for example ? I would purchase with the off road package for added protection, but would like more aggressive tyres if available.

Anyway... will continue to lurk and drop in the odd question or two :)

cheers

Welcome :)

I think having proper AT tyres tyres will increase the Yetis performance massively. The Haldex does very well with the grip it's got so increasing the traction will only help it get further!

As far as we can tell no one in GB has extensively driven the Yeti off road as yet. Their are a few of us on the Yeti forum for whom off road capability is important, I live off road for example and another marshals 4x4 and rally events. The Haldex 4th Generation system is sate of the art and endows the Yeti with good on and off road performance. Ultimately it will not do the more difficult stuff that full sized 4x4 vehicles are capable of because of small wheels/ground and angle clearances and so on. It might surprise you however. As far as wading is concerned, as you will realise knowing where the vulnerable parts are like air intake and ECU are very important. An extended air intake for the Yeti might draw some funny looks but then you might be used to having a dressed up Dico.

Thx for all the replies folks :)

Anthony, understand re ground clearance, departure and approach angles etc... and I saw the vids you linked too yesterday while perusing the forum :) Axel articulation looks not too bad for such a vehicle too... and its certainly seems to enjoy cocking a wheel in the air.

Do you know what the actual wading depth is ? Disco is 700mm with suspension raised - not that I ma expecting the Yeti to be the same of course. Also, where is the air intake ?

Assuming Skoda have extended the great job they seem to have already done to the engine bay, I would expect them to be high up out of the way.

I think a raised air intake would look funky ;) but a tad over ambitious on the Yeti for now...

As I said, this is happening for me at the end of the year (probably order Oct/Nov time for Jan delivery) and currently the Yeti seems the most logical choice out of all other small 4x4's I've seen. Most are just dressed up cars with no real ability off tarmac, the Yeti is being pushed as a very capable vehicle with the press being very impressed.

Does anyone know if last months Top Gear carried an article on the Yeti on Pikes Peak or was it just mentioned in their awards text ? Missed the mag by a day, was removed from the shelves day before I went hunting for it. If anyone has a copy scanned to read, that would be great.

What is the tyre size for the 17" wheel ? Are there any AT tyres like the Wrangler available ? Its not that aggressive (was standard fit on Discovery before rubbish Scorpions) and is a very good road, off road tyre for most situations.

cheers

welcome along

thx :)

Any ideas on my questions anyone ?

cheers

simonharper,

You would be better served asking specific questions on the Yeti forum. I do not normally scan the introduction pages and perhaps many of the other Yeti guys do not either.

Regarding the wading depth, many vehicles will exceed manufactures wading claimed depth for short periods if care and expert knowledge is applied. Manufacturers have to err on the safe side for litigious reasons but also prolonged wading at above those depths may cause some issues other than the obvious like dieseling which causes catastrophic engine failure..

I apologise that I can not give the measurement of the air intake as I have not purchased a Yeti myself yet but if you ask on the Yeti forum, some one will either have the answer or because the guys are so helpful and friendly one of them may well go and measure it for you.

Of course ;) No worries.

Will continue to mine the rest of the forum and gather info.

Cheers
