D-Link DI-514 802.11b 4-port Wifi Wireless Router

Featured Replies

Is this the sort of thing I could use with my PC and braodband to protect it from invasion etc? Also having this down near the phone point, I assume would mean I'd need no wires from there to my PC? - something "wireless" plugs into my PC, and this sits happily downstairs by the phone?

Yes - I have one of these (actually a DL514-P+), and that's exactly what it does. You need to set it up via one of the wired ports before you can use the wireless part, but thereafter you can use it as you describe. However you need to be aware that it doesn't have an ADSL modem built in, nor does it have a USB input, so you need an ADSL modem with Ethernet connection.

Ah - I deffo have modem coming from wanadoo, but they said it was USB only - must check that out then. :D

I have two, one for my computer, and one for my laptop, very impressed with it espicially the speed. For the laptop its brilliant, i can sit:

on the loo

in the garden

in my room

at the dinner table

in the loft

in my car on the drive

upside down and inside out :D

Aha! :D Forgot about this thread... Current setup now stands at telephone extension to room with filter on each end to get signal up here. And when wanadoo extract their finger out their proverbials, maybe I'll be online!!! :grumpy: Once online though I need to look at a USB hub or something similar as my winning printer from the Briskoda auction has to be setup with my PC.... yes, it's still in the box since May. :o

Well done on getting the phone connections sorted out! I'm currently using a D-Link unit with a built in ADSL router, but it's a wire job and not wireless.

The DL-514 unit can't connect to ADSL on it's own so you'd need to somehow connect it to the ADSL modem coming from your supplier. A better bet would be to go for the DI-614+ which is a wireless router and ADSL adaptor all in one. I've got a DSL-504T, but that's not wireless.

If you go wireless then you'll need to adapt your PC unless it has wireless capability built in. If you're sticking with D-Link then you'll need something like a DWL-520 interface card (if you've got a PC), or DWL-650 (PC-Card) if your PC is actually a laptop.

Hope this helps

I have an ethernet card already - was kind of hoping the wireless setup just had something "on the other end" to plug into that port on my PC...? :)

Reckon I'll see how it goes first - main problem now is having just two USBs - I really need something like a 4 into 1...

Chances are that your ADSL unit will be USB only.

Wishful thinking! You need a wireless adaptor for the PC too. Don't think there's much point in going wireless if the ADSL unit is sitting next to the PC. Wireless is handy if you use a laptop or something like a Psion netbook around the house, or in the garden or suchlike.

Easy peasy. You'll need a USB hub if you've run out of USB sockets on your PC. A 4 into 1 unit will cost between 10 and 15 quid for a basic unit.
