Sky compressing standard TV?

Featured Replies

Has anyone else notice the compression on ITV and channel 4 through Sky has become almost unwatchable?

So stuttery, and most of the news segments are simply poor - as though filmed on a mobile!

I was always under the impression that Sky sold bandwidth. Therefore the quality of the video is directly related to how much the broadcaster pays Sky, rather than Sky deliberately compressing video.

As HD takes sooo much more bandwidth, it wouldn't supprise me if broadcasters started lowering the quality of their SD channels, to push people into watching the HD versions.

ITV on sky and freesat has always been terrible, its worse than freeview and is also transmitted at less than the standard pal picture resolution of 720x576. I have not noticed any recent changes, it just looks as bad as ever.

Perhaps it's simply more noticeable now they use mobiles to record most of the news stories.

Yeah I've noticed a lot of compression artefacts on both channels.
