removing brake caliper

Hi,

I'm following the haynes manual for changing the brake pads on my car, I've removed the two securing bolts with a 7mm allen key, but I can't remove the caliper, or even see how it's possible to budge it at all. It's the FSIII caliper, and I have an '01 SDI. Can anyone help?

The vrs calipers are dfferent but is the pads stopping the caliper coming out?

The caliper just pulls away from the disc, however, if there is a lip on the disc it can stop it. Personally I would just give the calipr a couple of light taps with a hammer and see if it comes loose.

Yes I agree with it a few whacks with an aluminium or hide hammer, then use a screwdriver t try to retract the pads a bit then using two large screwdrivers - one top and one bottom, ease the calliper out, but remember that the lower end to held in with an extension bit or "peg", so eventually you will need to ease the top out completely then ease the calliper up a bit to get the bottom out. Also remember to fit this lower "peg" in first or you will never get the guide pins back in (because the lower end of the calliper will be sticking out too far. Remember to clean up all contact points and put on a small ammount of copaslip or copperease etc.

Much appreciated!! I spent ages wondering what was wrong. It was the lip of the disc that was stopping me. Apart from that setback, replacing the brake pads not as scary as I thought it was going to be.

if the lip was really big, maybe you should have renewed the discs as well

Now that you mention that, I didn't actually replace the brake pads on the wheel I took off as a) it was getting cold and b ) I wasn't sure about putting on new ones since I reckoned only the pad making contact with the inner and outer lip would be braking for the first bit and I wasn't sure about that. The lip on the disc is about as thick as a penny, I reckon I've got about three pennies left of thickness on the brake pad. Would I be better off replacing both?

I only started this job because my brakes started squealing when moving off and braking, I think now it might be because the lugs on the back of the pads are not greased, does this sound like the problem?

To me a penny's width of a lip would mean they need replacing. I might be wrong tho?
