electrics problem

Featured Replies

went out for a drive saturday(02 oct y vrs) when my turn signal, front & back wipers with washer motor & heating fans & rear window heater stopped working.

i thought it might be just a fuse.nope i tested every one & all ok.

so today i undid the fuse box & took the bottom part of the dashboard off (not as hard as i thought only 4 screws)behind it was a row of relay switches so i took each one out & put them back.

all started to work or at least for a short time.then stopped again, after a while started again then of again.....pulling my hair out now.

so it looks like its the relay.

BUT wich one is it that controles the above?

if any one has a part number & or even a parts diagram from a manual (or electronic copy of the manual)to help

that would be great

need to get it sorted as im selling the car soon

i hope it is just the relay switch it will save me a few quid rather than giving it to a main dealer.lol

could you pm me if possible

I don't have my Haynes manual to hand and my know-how is somewhat out of day, but here are a couple of ideas:

1. It sounds like what used to be (and may still be) called an auxiliary power relay: basically, a relay that supplies power to lots of things so it doesn't all need to go through the ignition switch. Since it's a simple on/off relay, it'll be pretty small (the bigger ones have electronics in them) and not have many pins (probably four: two for the coil, and two for the contact).

2. Some relays can be prised open, carefully, with a small screwdriver or two. You may well find that the problem is an overheated contact that has "dried" a solder joint (formed a hairline crack in it), which will usually be clearly discoloured and smell of... y'know, that "hot electronics" smell. Even if you can't open the relays, the smell might still give the game away.

An overheating auxiliary power relay fits in the with intermittent behaviour you have described. As the relay warms up, it expands, opening up the crack in the dry solder joint.

Good luck!

Use to have a similar problem in my wife 2001 Octavia Combi 1.6i

My turn signal, Wipers and the AC stop working. I Check fuses and every thing was Ok.

I took the car to the Skoda dealer.

In my case the problem was the ignition switch. One of the contacts inside the ignition switch was getting hot and it melted the plastic inside and this plastic melted cover the contac and does not allow the current to pass.

They put a new ignition switch and a new female socket.

Here are pics of my bad ignition switch so you can see the problem. Sorry if they are not clear.

This one shows the rear of the ignition switch and the female connector
