My furby is a brake light gobbling monster

Featured Replies

4 times I've had to replace bulbs in the last 7-8 months... they seem to take it in turns!

Anyone else's the same? Just bought a pack of 10 from ebay for £3ish delivered

I'd suggest checking the connections, particularly the earthing points, not sure if the fabia has earthing points around the rear lights/body work area. Sometimes you find them there, and if loose or rusted, they can cause electrical issues like this.

Any mods done to rear suspension? Stiffer rear end will blow bulbs on bad roads.

Nah all standard on the back matey. Friend thought it might be water related, all bone dry in there though! Bulb was pretty black to say it was only a few months old. Maybe its just cheapo halfrauds bulbs ;)

Next door neighbor went through a stack of brake light bulbs in his SEAT Leon. Badly made base causing poor contact with bulb holder contacts. A light smear of vaseline on the contacts helps prevent corrosion.

I have a fat tube of dielectric silicone grease somewhere, might be worth a smear? ;)

cheap, krap bulbs ! or you sit at the lights with your foot on the brakes instead of pulling the handbrake on, or both

never had any bulb fail on my soon to be 6 yearS old VRS,

There's an issue there somewhere as they shouldn't fail that often!

Either better quality bulbs or the condition of the contact between holder and bulb, or both :)

Dodgy alternator, regulator or battery can cause voltage spikes ...

Check the bulbs are secure and the bulb carrier is firmly in place and cant flop or move around.

Vibration/shock is the biggest killer of bulbs.

All seems nice and secure! I don't sit at lights with the footbrake on very often... out of gear, handbrake on. Can't stand seeing people hold it on the clutch... ignorance is bliss i guess.

Will keep an eye on them, maybe the replacement bulbs will be a bit better when they arrive :)

Its maybe the brake light switch - I had that problem on my last Fabia and the garage changed the switch to a later design which solved the problem.

Do you change them singly or as a pair?

First one i changed i did both, then after that just singularly keeping the others as spares. Going to keep an eye on it after fitting some new bulbs and putting some grease on :)

As i say, the bulbs were always quite black when I replace them and I do a crapload of miles, swaying more towards them just being cheap

Where do you get good bulbs from? Both tail lights and brake lights go pretty regularly. I had to buy emergency bulbs off a petrol station first time, then I went to a spares shop and they sold me the same brand, Ring. Pennies at the spares shop though, twice that at a petrol station.

I just had to get inside the boot trim to do the fuel filler flap; lots of water inside the trim. Won't have helped. Also, all last winter my power steering light came on after a cold start. And the winter before, but not this winter, and it's still on it's first 6 year old battery. Something's flaky with that ol' 'lastic trickery somewhere.
