4X4 brake options

Featured Replies

Hi all

I'm running a 1.8T 4X4 estate putting out aroung 200 BHP.

I need new discs & pads front & rear.

Do I upgrade the 288mm's on the front for 312's & buy standard (mintex etc) discs or go for 288;s from say Black diamond (grooved) ?

I can't afford to buy new carriers and buy upgraded 312's.

Any opinions?

Cheers.

Sounds like you have answered your ow question there :)

Not really?

Standard 312's vs upgraded 288's.

the pads are more important than the disks for an improvement in performance. So it really depends what you can afford. I went for the 312mm standard disks with EBC redstuff pads as I had a very good price on them, but a favourite on here are the DS2500's ? I think a search should turn up lots of Pad threads. HTH

:D

For how much extra it would cost you go for the 312mm fronts with some good pads Ferodo as stated earlier are a favourite. Brakes on a car can never be too good in my opinion!

Cheers for the replies.

Stuck 312s on mine and Mintex normal pads and it stopped much better but I had a brake judder, so put some more 312s on with Mintex Extreme pads. Judder turned out to be something else, but the car stops fine on both sets of pads. I didn't go for DS2500 because some people reckoned they weren't good cold and they cost a lot. I think your choice is down to whether you can source the carriers cheaply enough. Also stick new fluid in - it helps.

Take a look here, this is the complete front end package, discs, pads, callipers and carriers though.

Thanks mate, very handy link.

Your car sounds like a weapon!

Theres a guy on ebay that sell the carriers for the 312mm discs for £95 as oppossed to Skodas £115 each

I didn't bother with bigger discs after my remap (4x4 Estate, 230bhp) I just went with better pads. I run on TAROX fast road pads just on the front and it stops on a sixpence under legal driving conditions. On my second set now and the first set lasted pretty well.

I'm encouraged to hear that.

I've decided on standard diameter discs (EBC Turbogroove) paired up with EBC Redstuff pads.

When I get my idle carcass round to fitting them I'll post the results.

you'd be better going with the DS2500's over the redstuff.

Lots more cash, paid £69 for the Redstuff fronts.

I reckon the new combination will be a step up from my wafer thin warped OE setup.

I must agree I did the same when I saw a set of Greenstuff pads with a pic of a redstuff box on ebay. Asked the user to clarify then pounced on the BIN of £40 I think it was :D again with standard OE disks
