Seen a nice V6 2.7 on fleabay - what are your thoughts?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I used to own a nice VRS (mk2) which was by far and away the best car I've ever owned. Sadly she had to go and I've inherited my dads Frontera which is now (hopefully) on its way. This leaves me with a bit of cash and I've seen a lovely looking V6 Superb on Ebay (not sure if I can post links here but its the one advertised in Kent... - PM me for the link). I'm interested to know your thoughts on this, seeing as you are the experts!

Ideally I'd probably like a nice diesel but this one has got my attention! It's probably thirsty, but just what kind of mileage can I expect?? What other running costs should I consider? Is the auto box likely to go 'ping' in 20 miles etc....

Any help or advice, bring it on!

Cheers,

Ben

Just post the link :)

theres also a v6 diesel on ebay in yorkshire at £5000 at the moment 6 days remaining, tdi v6

is this the one you on about?

In terms of MPG have a look here:

Spritmonitor Superb

Has loads of Superbs registered by users on the site that tracks their MPG.

Should help.

Phil

Looks alright :)

Yep, its the 2nd one Rich.

Nightfire Blue is the best colour for the Superb! That one looks very nice, full leather and nav wheren't standard when that car was new so that is a plus. It looks really clean. The MPG isn't that bad on those, after all it isn't a monumental engine at all it's a 2.8 V6 performance wise they are (in manual form) about the same as a MkI Octavia vRS in a straight line, they even handle pretty well it wallows a little but once the suspension has bedded down it for the bend it tends to grip and grip.

No real issues to worry about really, as long as its been well looked after etc.

28mpg would be about average I would think, a bit more on a run, less in town :)

is it the same engine that was in the old vr6 golfs/corrados??

Nope, not the same as the VR6.

Cheers James, very useful!

P.S. your name sounds familiar - did you used to work in Cranleigh?

Interesting to see an Elegance without Sat Nav as standard................ :S

A V6 petrol Superb is a complete money pit in terms of depreciation, fuel cost and maintenance costs.

The Superb is not really a very good car by any stretch of the imagination unless you have a specific requirement for some special features. That's why it didn't sell. In my case, it was rear legroom and an efficient diesel engine plus towing ability which clinched the deal. You can't make a pig's ear into anything much better by adding lots of trim and an engine which needs an oil well to feed it. With an auto box, the V6 petrol doesn't even go much better than a manual diesel.

Check the projected road tax figures for a V6 petrol auto.... (For a change, I'd have to agree with the Govt. on this one - environmental vandalism).

sounds like you're not a big fan of the Superb then rotodiesel! Does it also sound like you own one?

I'm not so sure about them 'not selling' though, doesn't the fact that they have given the range a facelift etc. with the new model suggest that they make a few quid out of them? Car companies dont make things for the love of it anymore!

I accept that tax and petrol will be pricey on the model I've seen on ebay, but I'm interested to know what else I should be aware of.

I am afraid that Roto is one of the member's on this site that owns a Superb and slates it at every opporunity and seems to have a mass of mechanical knowledge about them offering great advice at times...........

Roto is the best person on here to give you a list of the things to look out for that will fail after certain mileage.........

I will however agree with him though that the 1.9 PD TDI is a great engine out of the group and driving an A6 2.0 TDI at the minute, I much prefer getting back in the Skoda to have more power and better MPG..........

The 24v V6 2.8 engine is very good, makes a nice noise and has plenty of go :)

Ignore the waffle about diesel. You obviously want a decent engine :giggle:

30v 2.8 IIRC. It is the "old" Audi engine with 193HP emoticon-0105-wink.gif

Ah, sorry! It's the normal angle, not the narrow angle!

Still, a good engine :D

To be fair, I'd quite happily have a 1.9 (130) with the right spec level (for the right price) as they generally get quite good reviews. I haven't heard much about this model and I think that is why this one has caught my interest.

1.9 TDi (130) then spend a couple of hundred quid on a decent remap and you'll have yourself something rather quick, rather large, that will return 50+ to the gallon without trying

But won't sound and go like a big petrol V6 ;)

A very good point Babs! I can tell by your choice of motor that you'd always prefer the petrol over the oil burners ;-)

Strangely enough that puts me exactly where I was about 3 and a half years ago before I bought the VRS. I was going to do EXACTLY that. Funny how life goes in full circles huh?
