my turbo let go...

Featured Replies

so i was casually driving along one night in the rain and my engine suddenly cut out. joy!

got towed home and the next day got recovered. the garage suspected it was my egr valve as it would turn forever but just not fire. after closer inspection they found the egr valve was caked in oil and crap *hmmm where did that come from* and looking deeper they found the turbo had well and truely blow itself apart! the shaft has broke clean off and the impellor? has sheered in half!

they now have me a new garrett turbo but they have to try and locate all the missing pieces. as the car just cut out suddenly with no warnings or noises im hoping that it wouldnt have had enough time to draw the big pieces through the other end of the intercooler? anyone have any advice? chances are i might need to replace the IC anyone know a price on the standard? if its high i might aswell go Forge!

this is all coming out of my pocket. bad bad times! also insurance and MOT next month!!!! :S i dont know if i should laugh or cry!!!

thier not sure they have to investigate. the shaft has dissapeared so thats definatly gone somewhere. they said the big stuff shouldnt get past the IC so hopefully everything just ended up in there.

Same happened to me ... see the link here. As you can see they had to change the intercooler. You may be able to get some goodwill from the dealer if its low mileage and has been serviced by a main dealer? I'm not sure on the exact prices but i think the dealer said that the full cost would have been around the £1.5k mark. Good luck with it.

im on 68k. what 1.5k was the total for everything? im upto 1k now with recovery, turbo, new egr valve (arm on mine had snapped) plus labour. dont suppose you heard howmuch the IC was?

Theres absolutely no reason for the intercooler to be replaced, the only thing they need to do is remove all boost hoses and the cooler and blast them out with a high pressure air line, in fact there used to be a bulletin on elsa which said exactly that emoticon-0148-yes.gif

i have had an update from the garage. they have stripped all the hoses and the intercooler. they found afew pieces but not the larger stuff. wiether thier stuck inside the intercooler they dont know unless they rip it apart :S

should have gone for a 150 hybrid turdo £900 with stronger internals

When the turbo went on my car a few months ago, my mechanic just backward blasted the intercooler out with water and an air line, no need to replace it. Car has done another 6k miles since then, so I would have thought something would have shown up by now

Good luck with it though, its a royal pain in the arse - think mine cost me about £850 total for a brand new Garret PD150 (vb) turbo, and fitting etc.

the other question should be "why did it actually stop"? what has caused the engine to stop as it can still suck air past the busted turbo and they should run with no turbo fitted (does actually) so it should at least start unless something is causing compression to be down ie bits stuck under valves or something

usually because the exhaust wheel jams into the housing not allowing exhaust gas out therefore stalling the engine

ahh ok i suppose it could . the last 2 i have done have been oct 2 ones and both times the exh impeller was in the cat, both running fine just no boost

the arm on the EGR valve had snapped off and it was stuck in the wrong position and/or the way the turbo had jammed solid. the car turns over fine just wouldnt fire and would billow smoke out the air filter so they gases are being forced the wrong way. the garage have had it running with new egr valve and without the turbo!

just waiting for a new intercooler. id rather pay 250 for a new one than risk more pieces getting blown through!

thankyou everyone!
