Car passed MOT but would not start

Featured Replies

It was strange as some of you will know i have been having problems with fuel consumption and starts so the car went for its MOT, I left it last night with them as i was out last night and couldnt be botherd driving first thing, but got a call at half ten to say they could not get it going after an hour of trying and was asked to come for the car.

I tried to start it and it wouldnt have it just turning over like there was no spark or fuel it wasnt even trying to start. When i put my code reader on it came up with the fault code 0515 cam sensor no signal, the wires to the plug that go to this sensor were cracked so i cleared the codes then the car started!

The mot station said to leave it running and when it was upto temp they would do its mot, which to cut a long story short it passed, then I am looking at the emissions report and this is what it says...

FAST IDLE TEST:

CO: Limits 0.200% Actual Value: - 0.004% why is it minus?

HC: Limits 200 PPM Actual Value: 55 PPM

Lambda: Limits 0.970 - 1.030 Actual Value: 1.013

NATURAL IDLE TEST:

CO: Limits 0.300% Actual Value 0.000%

After all the smoke problems i have been having it appears that the car isnt putting out any CO which seems strange (not that im complaining)

Just got one advisory which was front offside suspension arm has slight play in a pin or bush

Smoke is more to do with particulates and HC. Wasn't your smoke white? I.e. water?

Yeah it was white but seems to have calmed down, The wires to the cam sensor were cracked so i cut the rubbish wire off and re-soldered the plug using fresh wire, but the error code 0515 is still there even when clearing. Is this looking like a new cam sensor and are they expensive.

cheers

is this a 1.6 AEE engine? or the later alloy one?

the catylist will be taking most of the crap out hence the low readings show its working ok

Oh well....least its got a 12 month ticket on it now lol, just have to see how it goes.

What were you saying the problem was again? ;)

Justin, feel sorry you you mate..

Probably head gasket failure across a water way.

Add that to your Gearbox on it's way out.

Add in the mix potential cam sensor replacement ( not that costly though) depends if you are fitting it yourself.

Your ingrediants may be leading you to think about moving the car on, while it seems to be running ok and with a new MOT.

I know that is the plan I cant get over it passed its mot, Is that cam sensor easy to do then? this is what is causing me problems starting it at times. Also does the ecu go to its default values after the 3rd atempt, the reason I ask it when i clear the cam sensor codes from the ecu it takes 3 tries before it starts then its fine for the rest of the day but if i cleared the code again it would take the car 3 tries before starting up just wondered if the ecu is programmed to go to its default values after so many failed tries.

I know what you mean though about the luck im having I think my car was a friday built car lol.
