Why is vRS so much heavier than Elegance TDi?

Featured Replies

Whilst sitting at home bored and nursing 'man flu' I was browsing the Skoda site and noticed that the vRS weighs in at 1440 kgs whilst the elegance comes in at 1335. That's a whole 105kgs or a really fat mate in the passenger seat!! Now if you compare the power per tonne situation then if you do the maths then it works out 17bhp/tonne difference which to ne honest on a car weighing nearly 1.5tonnes is not a massive difference.

So where does the huge weight gain come from on the vRS 170CR? If you have the DSG then this is a whopping 1505kgs (170kgs difference!! or two men in the back seat!)

So apart from stiffer suspension and larger wheels and a little bit more power/tonne what is the other advantages of the vRS over the Elegance as you get less toys as standard?

Dunno.

CR170 is 5kg more than the PD170. Weight difference between PD170 and PD140 must be negligible.

Wheels probably account for something like 10kg all round?

Guess the rest must be the ironing board stuck on the boot. :)

Do they both have the same 6 speed gearbox too?

I guess so but cannot confirm it.

I woulod imagine wheels will make a little difference but IIRC the vRS has extra strength added to the chassis to help the handling.

When have Skoda ever got their stats right?

IIRC the vRS has extra strength added to the chassis to help the handling.

I think that's a misconception that has been floating around ever since the press release for the Mk2 VRS. I believe they were referring to an increase in rigidity over the Mk1 - not an increase in rigidity over the standard Mk2.

Where is this mystical strengthening?

Ah that must be what I thinking.

In the Australian brochures the standard 2.0 TDI (103kW) DSG wagon is shown as 1560kg whereas the vRS TDI (125kw) DSG wagon is listed at 1510kg.

It may be calculated with and without a driver and half filled fuel tank.

Maybe they have actually added some weight to the vRS to balance the rear.

I got my TFSi estate on the weighbridge at work, it weighed 1350kg, though my audi book weight and actual wet weight were spot on

They calculated with and without driver/half filled fuel tank.

Well i had half a tank and boot full of tools and it still came in at 1350Kg!!
