Windows steaming up

Featured Replies

During the recent snowy weather we had a problem with the windows of our 140 tdi steaming up. This would occur very rapidly. I tried adjusting/ setting the heating controls to prevent it occurring, to no avail. To clear the windscreen i had to set the heat to max (blowing onto the screen), which very quickly became uncomfortable. the heated rear screen couldn't cope (completely) with the problem and several times it was necessary to drive with the windows open. I dare sat we were taking in some snow on our feet. i didn't see any other cars similarly effected. The car had recently been serviced. It was after this service that the problem first occurred. Coincidence? Any ideas?

Phil...

Thanks for that. The car is not here at the moment, I will check it this evening.

I have this problem in very cold weather, thanks to a dead recirculation flap motor.

The A/C will not switch on below 4 degrees C as a safety measure to prevent frost damage to the compressor... Once the temperature rises to 4 or above, you should find that the A/C will clear the condensation very quickly.

It's also always worth checking the foot-wells and inner sills for signs of any water ingress, just incase you have a leak.... Particularly if the problem persists in warmer weather.

It does it on mine as well. I believe the manual says that the climate control doesn't bring any chilling on when the outside temperature is less than 5C, so it's heating only. Was going to check again to see if there was a way to fool it as I had a neurotic dog on my back seat for about 15 miles the other day and the blessed dog insisted on panting continuously and steaming up all the windows. Ended up having to open the windows to get rid of the condensation.

Having no chilling at low ambient temps is fine if the outside air temperature is low humidity, but when it's 3C and snowing / sleeting, it doesn't really help.
