Handbrake cable removal

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I'm trying to remove a rear brake caliper from a TDi 110 and have run into a silly little problem. I've unhooked the handbrake cable from the arm and taken the retaining clip off but can't see a way to get it through the guide plate. I'm guessing it's just rusted together but could do with knowing which way things move before forcing it.

A couple of pics to show what I mean;

Thanks

The outer-cable end should just be resting in the guide there, where you removed the clip. You should be able to pull the whole cable away to the right. It can be a little awkward as the outer-cable is very stiff, but it looks like the cable end is just a bit rusted into the guide like you say. Give it a good wobble, and as a last resort put a screwdriver on the inside end and give it a tap with a hammer.

Blame the gritters for covering every car in Britain with salt (but always on the night that it's not freezing)! I'm thinking there must be a non-corrosive alternative to salt for artificially reducing the freezing point of water.

Alcohol? No, wait, there would be loads of people running after the lorries with buckets then...

Haha so close! Good for degreasing the engine when passing it on the motorway!

I wonder what the freezing point of stale beer is...... good opportunity for recycling!
