Fitting brake pads

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've done pads before on an old Orion and Escort, and also an old Rover 216. Never needed a rewind tool before.

But was told last night by a mechanic mate that a rewind tool would be required to force back the caliper on modern cars (actually he was referring to the wife's Verso). Is this necessary on the Octavia 1? Or can you just push 'em back?

How does a rewind tool work anyway (sorry, silly question I know)

Thanks,

Martin

halfords sell a kit, about £20, makes life a lot easier although you can do it without. always a handy thing to have though!

you need the rewind tool if you have discs on the rear, this is because the handbrake operates through the rear brakes.

IIRC that because of the handbrake mechanism the piston on the rear brakes is threaded and unwinds as the pads wear and so needs to be wound back in when you change the pads.

Hi there, if you are talking about the Front pads, then you do not need a wind back tool for them, They are easy you just remove the sliding caliper allen bolts to swing out the pad retainer section, then push in the caliper piston to compensate for the new pads.

For the Rear pads you will need a wind back tool and can not do it without unless you manually turn / twist the piston with something else, but that will take ages and you will probably loose a few knuckles in doing it. You will damge the piston/caliper if you try to force it without turning the piston.

A wind back tool can be purchased in Halfords or any good motor stores, like GSF or Euro car parts..

It basically fits in between the caliper and piston and has a threaded section with a twist handle on the top that as you turn it it winds in the piston. Simple device but effective.
