Spare wheel pressure

Featured Replies

Sorry if this is a pearoast but I did search and didn't find anything clear.

What should the pressure be on the 16" spare for a VRS (TFSI)?

I couldn't find a straight answer in the manual. The only thing I found was that the "R18" spare should be at 4.2 Bar.

Is the spare not R16? And 4.2Bar, that's about 60psi. I don't put my MTB tyres that high! Is it right?

If you've got a normal "full-size" spare, I'd use the higher of the quoted "normal load" pressures for the road wheels. If the "R18" is a spacesaver, yeah 4.2bar is believable, but otherwise it's way above the maximum pressure (by 1 bar or so) that the tyre manufacturers themselves suggest! [no smilie I can see for scared or worried now]

4.2 bar would be for a space saver and would have the pressure molded in to the tyre side wall ,I would set your spare pressure to the max pressure depending on your cars speck and then you can deflate to suit ,

Sorry KENONEIL Just read your post and gave same info !!

Just to reiterate some earlier points -

Its a 205/55/R16 from memory which makes it the same size as the standard alloy on an Elegance model. There should be data on the filler flap for that size tyre.

Ignore the manual, it's not exactly crystal clear is it  62psi is a big no no.

Thanks.

Yes it's the full sized 205xR16. I pumped it up to 34psi before I used it, 4.2 bar seemed ridiculous.

I don't think the filler cap has ever had relevant info. It's got nothing for the R18 it came supplied with.

For all of my cars, I have the spare tyre inflated to just a little over what might be needed to allow for some losses over the time until I check it again. It is always easier to reduce an over inflated spare than to pump one up if it is too low.

I got caught out once because of that, had a flat and broke out the spare - soft as **** :giggle:

Nowadays I always carry an electric compressor in the boot

I got one out of convenience years ago and it's something I'd never go without again.

I've lost count of the number of times I've had blow up my mates tyres with it and they've all gone on and bought one for themselves.

34PSI is what I run my rears (205/55R16W Toyo Proxes T1-R on an Elegance) at; the filler cap says 32, but you get significant edge wear at that.
