Wheel bearing! ok to drive?

Featured Replies

Im pretty sure i have a front wheel bearing gone, getting aloud droning noise really quite loud at 40mph (and turning left) gets abit quiter above but then stays the same upto motorway speeds.

I was hoping to get it done this week but the garage i use is unable to do it, thing is i have a 500mile round trip to make next monday will it be ok?

I have it booked in soon as im back. Thanks.

I wouldnt go driving any long distances, you already have play in the bearing as its pulling left. The bearing could collapse totally and leave you stranded with a very wobbly wheel, in the worst case it could send you off the road into oncoming traffic.

Yeah i hear what your saying, just to point out i wont be doing 500mile's in one day 250 one day then 250 following week, i dont really wont to drive the car but i have a plane to catch from gatwick and have already paid for parking too, hire a car is not a option due to the lack of funds so i may have no choice.

I would not risk it TBH, it could cost you a lot more in the long run :(

Find a garage that can do it in time??

Steve

No, wouldnt even consider driving that distance. have a ring round,

Well rang a couple of garages with no luck, going to try a little local garage tomorrow to see if they can do it before tuesday, i really hope so! :S

offer a generous payment....

TBH i had a rear go on my TDI in Germany on summer and i left it for ages, months it used to make a noise but that was it.

I would say leave yours because its sods law it will go wrong but as a general rule they wont fall apart or cease just stay noisey and wear the tyre funny

Well had the wheel bearing done and what a joke! dropped car off at 8.30am i get a phone call at 12.00 saying they have damaged the bearing trying to get it in !

So then they say its going to be at least another 2 hours, all the time me just hanging around trying to kill time in town. At 3pm get a phone call its all done! cost me £147.00 and now the steering wheel is off center too! :wonder: NO wonder i dont use main dealers, my mate where i normally take my car said should be a hour and half job took them 6 and half hours in total!!!!!!!

Really make's me appreciate how good my independent garage is!

Blimey. emoticon-0104-surprised.gif

Good independants are hard to find, but completely invaluable and deserve loyalty :)
