Bonnet movement..

Featured Replies

Have noticed that at speed (anything above 60), I can see noticeable movement from the bonnet - starting to move an inch or two. Checked for any rubber rests and there only appears to be one on drivers side wing, near the coolant bottle. There is nothing along the passenger side wing. Bonnet closes as normal, and ther are no large gaps or signs of misalignment. Something has surely fallen out (!), and was wondering if I can get some of these rests to remove the fear of having a nice silver bonnet coming through the windscreen. :'(

Cant find anything part-wise on here or google - anyone help?

Thanks!

Mine has a rubber foot on both sides

that is not right!!!

I think replacing the missing rubber thingy and rechecking the movement is the first thing you need to do.

when you say movement

do you mean the bits over the lights have a little flap at speed?

if so its normal as there is only one place that its locked down and thats in the center, as for stops, they are just there to keep the bonnet up at the correct level, there should be the 2 plastic ones at the front, they are the main ones and one or 2 small gray grommet ones up the side wings, so long as the 2 at the head lights are there mate its fine, they may need adjusting slightly but the small gray ones are pos not there as they are flimsy and easy to knock off.

I would suggest you show a pic as that kind of movement you state is worrying.

As Billy stated if you don't have the lower adjusting stops at the front, or you do but they are wound down too far then that might explain the movement to a certain degree.

Thanks to all who replied. The picture of the TDI engine bay shows where I think the problem lies - right hand side rubber "rest" is missing. Where can I get one ??

The two plastic ones at the headlights are there, so will try adjust these also.

It has lifted a good two inches going in to a headwind - thats been the worrying thing - have rechecked and lubricated the catch for good measure also.

Thanks all!

WOW 2" is a lot, is there anything wrong with the catch? ie not locking off, sounds like what would happen when you pull the lever then go for a drive, like its on the emergency catch, I dont see how the little rubber stops being missing will stop it from lifting?

good luck with it mate, best place would be skoda unfortunately.

2inch lift sounds like the actual latch has failed somehow. Either that, or the rubber stops above the headlights are wound down too low, but still I would never expect to see 2 inches of travel, as at "rest" the bonnet would appear to be far too low.

Could the hook at the bonnet be broken / not secured to the bonnet properly?

That amount of travel will not be fixed by a soft rubber spacer missing. All they do is stop the bonnet pushing inwards and not outwards. You must not be getting the full catch locking the bonnet down. Maybe the front adjusters are raised too high and stopping the bonnet catch clipping in.??

Thanks again guys.

The reason I thought it was purely the missing rubber rest on the passenger side, is that the greatest movement is on the drivers side. I'm wondering about the catch now, as when it went to have its last service before christmas, the catch and lever were stiff and I needed a screwdriver to release it. Up to this point the bonnet was not rising noticeably from day to day. Will carry on "fiddling" with the catch and front rests.

Cheers. emoticon-0148-yes.gif
