Factory fit sat navs ?

Featured Replies

Im just about to get an 07 L&K Octavia estate that has a MFD2 Nexus sat nav fitted. I understand its not as good as a columbus, but was wondering if its worth upgrading ?

How much are second hand columbus units and would i get much for the Nexus ?

im after something that i can pair my phone with and play my mp3 player through.

Cheers,

Paul

Sadly, as good as a Columbus is, it's just not as good as a good third-party dual-din headunit like a Kenwood DNX-5240 (about £500) or DNX-7240 (about £900) or Pioneer 910bt (not sure on the price these days). They just do it all so much better (especially the satnav side) and they integrate very well (steering wheel controls etc.).

I've had the MFD, the MFD2 and the MFD3 in various cars over the last 5 years and I just shelled out for a DNX-7240 for my wife's car and I'm having one in my new Superb estate (even though it comes with a Columbus) as the VAG SatNav is just appalling compared to the Garmin software in the Kenwood.

Skoda do not produce a Double DIN adaptor for the Octaiva, only a Single Din one.

To link with the phone you need the Bluetooth unit, this doesn't need an MDF3 to work, just Maxidot dash. If you use it along side the MDF3 your get touch screen dialing etc also.

Im far from a techy so dont understand the above. My Nexus is an MDF2 and didnt realise you could make it touch screen

You can't make an MFD2 do touch screen, I think what No Waiting meant was that Skoda don't make an official double-din adapter facia so that a normal square shaped head unit goes into the dash neatly. That's quite possibly true, but there are at least 3 suppliers who will sell you a trim piece to make an aftermarket unit fit.

There is even the rather wonderful Pioneer 9110BT which is built into a VAG specific mounting so it fits straight in and integrates perfectly, but is a rather better navigation unit. IT is very expensive though, at roughly £1300 fitted.

I would think you should be able to get about £200 for your MFD2. MFD3's seem to start about £500 for Skoda ones. You can get a Kenwood DNX-5220 on Amazon for £470 and I know what I'd buy.

Seems like i need to sell my MFD2 then and get a kenwood.

Will the Kenwood fit straight in with out having to change any wiring ?

Who wants to buy an MDF2 then ?

Paul

With the Columbus/MFD3 you can connect your MP3 player, but you will need to add an Aux In cable as the connection is at the back and designed to work with the socket built into the arm rest.

But to pair with you're phone you also need the Skoda Bluetooth unit - this will work along side both the MFD2 & MFD3 (but you need a Maxidot dash).

No - it also doesn't have Bluetooth so can't link to your phone (one of your requirements!), but there may be an addon you can purchase for it.

If you want plug and play, then your limited to the cheapo Witson units, the MDF3 or the Pioneer 9110BT.

If you search on here you'll find loads of info and pictures that will help...

I havent a clue what maxidot is but think i need it, but not even sure if my car already has it. What am i looking for ? If it isnt fitted where can i get it from and how much and what is involved in fitting it ?

Is the Skoda bluetooth adapter the only option or can i buy any after market blue tooth kit, say like a parrot kit ?

As for a supplier, there's eBay, Shark, VRStu or SuperSkoda to mention just four! Why not drop Ben a message at Shark (http://briskoda.net/forums/forum/154-shark-performance/) for starters.

Basically, yes. If you want the steering wheel controls to work you need an adapter cable (CAW-VW2150/£60-ish) and you need the ISO connector block for a Skoda (no idea on the cost but if it's over £20 I'll be gobsmacked).

If you want Bluetooth you can either buy a 5240bt (£620-ish) or you can buy the 5220 and the KCA-BT200 bluetooth module (£70). The bluetooth module is by Parrot and the Sat Nav is bought in from Garmin. It's very good stuff.

They all come with USB in/out and ipod/iphone in/out cables.

Oh, and the TMC actually works as well!
