Tyre wear on 4x4

Featured Replies

I've just noticed my rear tyres are down to the markers after only 6k while my fronts still have plenty to go. I suspect this is down to my old suspension setup which had a bias towards the rear so probably put extra weight over the rear axle. Just wondered how other's have found tyre wear on the 4x4.

Heavy, but then I drive it somewhat hard. Notably outer edges on fronts, I have a feeling there is actually a touch of positive camber due to the height on a stock car.

I know of at least one Briskoda member who is in ongoing discussions with Skoda about this, and read a "survey" where several 4x4 owners complained about excessive tyre wear.

Then again, I've also heard similar things about some Audi's (Haldex *and* Torsen based 4wd systems).

I'm just a bit shocked at only 6k, I expected more like 10k.

It really is down to how you drive it... I'm not sure how much life I get from mine to be honest, but it's the fronts that get killed first, not the rears.... have you had the alignment of the rear checked recently?

The rear camber was around 2 degrees on the old suspension and there is excessive wear to the inner edges but there is consistant wear across the whole tyre surface down to the markers.

I drive like a granny and all the tyres have at least 50% tread after 12K. That said, I have recently noticed wear on the outer edges of the front tyres like IAN.

(Typo corrected...:o )

Forge do adjustable bottom tie members sio you can have whatever camber you want

Powerstation are the boys to set it up

I get about 10000 out of the fronts & a bit more out of the back & I dont drive like a granny

Jon? Jon? (checks, yup still got full head of hair) Jon??!!!!

Ooops! Since corrected. :o
 ithankyou!

I must drive like the oldest person in the world then, the car had 16k motorway miles on it when I picked it up (I assume since it covered them in 3 months and from the state of the leading edge of the bonnet), its now on 26k with 4-5mm of tread left all round (swapped front to back recently). I reckon 40k could be possible!! I didn't notice any shoulder wear particularly.

2 new tyres, Peak District, oh no the back is overtaking the front, grassy embankment. Won't be caught out again. :P

Excessive rear tyre wear detected at 3,500 miles from new on near side outer edge. Shortly afterwards the off side rear tyre started to wear in a similar manner.

Skoda, uder warranty, fitted a mod to the rear suspension and wheel alignment was set up with a Skoda approved laser wheel alignment rig. This is a known problem with 4x4 Octavias - mine dates from Nov 2001 subsequently tyre wear has been even on all four wheels until a second dealer re-alignment at approx 26,000 and

That's interesting to know, Octal. And welcome to Briskoda. :D

my rears lasted 4500miles.. and my octy if FWD!

weill they had 6mm @ 4400miles then 0mm by 4500....

I blame conedodgers.
