High speed SD Cards

Featured Replies

With the 450D I've just got I obviously need to make a change (unfortunately) from the CF cards I used with my 350. What are people using and what are good for sustained decent transfer and write rates?

I'm finding the 'Class' system pretty confusing as some of the Class 6 Sandisk cards look to perform better than others?? Also saw Panasonic have some 'Class 10' ones available? http://www.mymemory.co.uk/SDHC/Panasonic/Panasonic-SDHC-Card---Class-10

I've always normally used Sandisk Extreme (mainly the III range) so I'm a bit wary of going with a Panasonic one.

Looking at a 4 or 8Gb card.

Cheers,

Steve

I would stick with the Sandisk ones. I use a mainly Ultra 2's in either 16 or 8Gb just because of cost really.

My 16Gb card will fit 1400+ jpegs at maximum resolution.

Thanks Ian. I'm interested as much in fast writing as I am in ultimate storage. It's rare that I shoot more than 500 in one sitting before having access to the laptop, and I always have a spare card with me anyway (in case of failure as much as running out of storage).

And also that the 450D is writing more data per file than the 350D was, as I've gone from 8 to 12MP. So if I'm burst shooting I was considering how decent the sustainable writing rate was - which lead me to confusion over the SD Class system as this doesn't really seem to have been considered :dull:

Cheers,

Steve

This is a case in point; which would be best as the first two are Class 6 and in the same 'Extreme III' range, the more expensive offering a higher write rate. But then there's a standard Extreme, but rated at Class 10? :wonder:

Class Speed is related to the minimum write speed, isn't it?

So, in theory, the class 10 would guarantee you to never drop below 10Mb/s even though it 'usually' manages 30Mb/s, and the class 6 can only guarantee never dropping below 6Mb/s even though it also usually manages 30Mb/s?

It could also be that the class 6 was just manufactured before the class 10 spec card was released with 'class 10' on it?

It's also worth considering that I don't think the SD Association has officially released the specs for class 10.

And also worth noting that there's no independent verification needed to ensure a card meets a class specification. So it's still just a stab in the dark choosing one based on description anyway.

Thanks - those were my basic understandings too. And yes, I saw that the Class 10 isn't really an official standard anyway! :wonder:

The Extreme III 30Mb/s (Class 6) should do the trick I think.

I have a couple of smaller (4Gb I think) Extreme III cards if you fancy them Steve?
