Rumble Rumble

Featured Replies

Hi guys just want to see if anyone else has had this ...... I have got a rumble that sounds very much like a wheel bearing but doesnt get worse when turning ,well today got the car up on my mates ramp and lo and behold no play in the wheel bearings and turning pretty freely (near side front slightly tighter than rest but not by much) hmmmn a bit of a concern as i was hoping it was a bearing on the way out!!!! I then took my friend out and he seems to think it could be the dif but its definately a rumble and not a whine and the gearbox is still smooth and drives well just has that noise there ???? Im reluctant to rip it apart on the offchance so I will wait and let it develop a little more but it could be an excuse for an LSD and G60/Vr6 clutch !!!!!

Have you checked under the dust shields on the discs for small stones?

Do you know which side it is coming from?

I had a garage check mine out as I had similar, it turned out to be a flat spot on one of the tyres (as stupid as it sounds.......)

Try swapping the wheel you thought it was with the spare......

It definately sounds worse than a few stones rattling about Ken but have you had this problem before and found it cured it ??? definately sounds like the front end though !!!!

The noise seems to start building from the point where you start to accelorate in second and keeps building and then when you lift off a horrible deep rumbling noise as you are letting it roll on the over run :S

Just before xmas i kerbed my car and had a similar noise. A rumble coming form the front nearside which i'd hit, started noticing around 30ish mph. Took it to the garage who checked tracking, tyres etc. Their was no play in the wheel to signify bearing trouble, however stated that some of the internals on the bearing or hardening or something like that could be chip/damaged or whatever. Anyway in the end replaced the bearing which solved the problem and not had any noise since.

well one thing my mate the mechanic has just told me on the phone is the same as you a bearing can get real noisy without showing play but its an expensive trial and error if its not lol and i deffo have not kerbed my car so he reckons to just take it staedy and let it develop a bit more ...or do the wheel bearings on the off chance !!!!!!

I was charged £90.

Think it was £42 or something for the bearing and the rest labour, took them about an hour and half.

Cheers Buddy i may have to take the plunge but i will give it the weekend to develop and see if if it becomes more pronounced or obvious !!!

Mine looked fine too, but until the mechanic changed the wheel, (i took mine in, convinced it was a bearing) and the noise went, I couldn't believe it.

May be worth a try......

Sorry about the late reply. Yes, I have had this problem before, and mistook it for a wheel bearing! The stone's not "rattling about" though; it's physically trapped in the space between the brake discs and the dust shield, rubbing against the disc. In extreme cases, they can actually cut a groove into the disc.

I had similiar symptoms in my old 02 Octavia TDI 90bhp - turned out to be the differential. 130,000 miles or so. Got rid of the car.

Have since bought another Octavia, this time bearing in mind that this is a common fault but will replace the gearbox if this one goes.

In between Octavias I had a Volvo S60 - lovely car but far too many faults!
