Weak Handbrake (After replacing rear brakepads)

Featured Replies

Hi All

Just had the rear brakepads replaced by the mechanic (Feredo Brakepads) on the 1.9 tdi 55 plate.

However the handbrake almost comes all the way to the top. Its okay on a flat (3/4 up) but on on an incline its goes all the way and its very weak.

The mechanic says the pads need bedding in, is this correct?

The pads will need to bed in to be fully effective, but if you have that much travel then something needs adjusting. Assuming the handbrake cable has been reconnected to both calipers then i would suggest it wants adjusting.

I think there's a method to this, iirc you have to switch the engine on and apply the brakes with the handbrake off, then pull it up and down several times, each time with the footbrake applied, hth.

That'll do it
