Knock/light 'thud' from engine bay

Featured Replies

Hiya guys, wonder if anyone can help. I've got a '57-plate Octy vrs tdi pd (done 27.5k miles) and I've noticed for a good while now that when i'm moving in slow traffic (sub 20mph) that there's a strange noise coming

from the engine area. This noise sounds like a knock/thud and happens in the following two scenarios; 1) When i've released just released the clutch and taken up drive (at very low speed).

2) When i'm sat in standing traffic, in neutral and i 'tap' the accelerator gently.

This does not tend to happen at high speed changing gear. I do a lot of motorway miles in my daily commute with occasional slow traffic along the way (country lanes + roundabouts etc).

Does anyone have any idea what this could be and has anyone else experienced this? -its driving me mad!

Your help would be appreciated.

Hiya steve, yes it sounds very similar to your loud clunk. I've read a bit about the flywheel issue and i questioned

my local dealer about it but they claimed it wasn't an issue with my vehicle. I'm not convinced so i'm taking my car to

a mechanic i trust who i always use to do my servicing etc. He's very good and very honest. You'll have to let me know if you find out what it is

and i'll do the same.

Sorry steve about the blank reply before, my browser's playing up!

Just remembered that i was speaking to my mate at work who's a fair bit older than me, quite an experienced DIY

mechanic, and he was telling me that it could be worn thrust bearings in the clutch assembly? He couldn't say for certain, but he said

it was a possibility??

I have read on here a long time ago about 2.0TDi engine mounts being weak or faulty that clunk/knock when taking up drive.

Yes, I recall engines virtually falling out of the engine bay big time at speed!!! Do a search. I think it was the mount on the off-side that failed.

Got an update on the knock/light thud from engine bay area. This is very interesting. Took it to my usual ex-VAG mechanic guy

who usually services my cars etc and he had a listen to the noises and came out on a test drive with me. His conclusion (although he wasn't able to

put the car on the ramp due to it being very busy) was that the sound was coming from the gearbox/flywheel area. He said my wheel bearing didn't sound noisy-just bit of

tyre wear. He said that if the flywheel was to be replaced it would cost, inc. parts + labour, approx £500-£1000 !!!!! to do - and he's good value too!.

As it happens, my vehicle is still under warranty and therefore having spoken to my mechanic friend, i then decided to contact my local dealer about this.

They said to bring it down and they would have a look. I had already reported this issue to them before christmas. It has since gone worse.

As soon as i recreated the sound pressing the accelerator straight away they said it was the DUAL MASS FLYWHEEL. They booked it in straight away and its going to be

replaced with new flywheel and anything else that needs doing at the same time next week. RESULT.

Hopefully that should sort it. If anyone can think of any other potential issues i should bring to the dealers attention when it goes in then i would be

most grateful. Cheers.

Make sure they replace the clutch too which includes release bearing also.Had mine done at 33K miles (1.9TDi) but was converted to SMF and had a complete new clutch too.Sadly though as yet a SMF isn,t avaliable for the 2.0TDi.

Glad you got a sorted though and no cost to you
