Personalised plates on a new car

Featured Replies

I am vaguely considering buying a personalised plate for the Yeti. It's a very cheap one and very, very geeky.

Does anyone know if there's a cost saving on the OTR price if you've already got a registration plate? Obviously there's the cost of the new reg and a transfer sort of fee, but does the first registration fee get waived?

I'm just trying to work out how much it'll cost overall.

I was speaking to a friend on this subject. There is disadvantage when selling your SM, as it will take time to issue a new number if you are keeping the private number, so I'm led to believe! I'm ready to be corrected.

I'd not really thought of that. Hmm.

IMHO I'd get the car registered and put the cherished plate on afterwards, that way it already has a reg :)

Aye - that does sound the simpler option!

Does it keep the original numbers as a ghost number when on private plates?

I was advised against registering a new car on a private reg, can be difficult to take it off apparently?

Ta for the advice everyone. :)

I shall wait until the car is registered and then decide about changing plates. Possibly. I think it'll annoy the MD here, so definitely worth doing.

Hi you will save £80 the registration fee - included in the price if you buy from DVLA. Your dealer will advise against because it is more hassle for him.

If your name is PAT I have the perfect Reg No for you

Yes the original plate will go back on the car. :)

If you buy the plate from the DVLA then the 'assignment' fee is already included in the price. You will be sent the V750 which you'll give to the garage for them to register the car.

If you buy from elsewhere then it won't be.

It's usually easier to put your plate on from new as the dealer network recognises which spares etc are suitable for your car.

When you come to get rid of your car you can put the plate on retention or transfer it to your next car.

Here is the official info for you to have a look at.

I've had a private plate for ages - been transferred to both new and 2nd hand motors.

Never had the slightest hint of a problem. Dealer always helpful.

Advantage of getting put on from new is that you dont have to buy a new set of plates to put on ! (if you know what plate you're getting, ask the dealer to supply the "private" set when he gives you the car - or at least for collection afterwards - after all, it's free advertising for them).

Other marginal advantage for me is that my trailer and bike carriers do not need new plates when I change vehicle.

My personal plate was obtained from DVLA cost 240 pounds it included the assignment fee of 80 ( if bought from a dealer this is unlikely to be included in the price ), you will still pay the first registration fee if its a new car ( invioced by your dealer ). When you come to sell the car there will be a retention fee for your number. To keep costs to a minimum on a new car choose from what your dealer has to offer 'number plate wise.' Your local dealer should be able to advise.

Nice car shame about the fuel.....

I will not be reeled in; I will not be reeled in; I will not be reeled in. ;)

Wonder how long before Babs agrees with you though....

I was pretty certain that you didn't save any part of the 'New Registration Fee' on a new vehicle, if it went straight onto a private plate.

But having a private plate on the car from the start and then subsequently transferring it off when you sell shouldn't, in theory, be any more of a headache. They'll just assign a suitably aged normal registration to the car at that point.

If it were me I'd just get it as a normal plate, then transfer your private reg on at a time convenient to you.

Steve

You don't want delivery of your new car being delayed because the dealer was dicking around trying to sort out your private plate.

Don't forget you'll have to alter your insurance details if you change plates - probably at another cost to you!

Maybe this wasn't such a mildly-great idea. :D

no problem sporky.

I have a private plate on my vw from new, bought it off dvla, gave the forms to the dealer and it was fitted before I collected the car.

I can tell you now you though that you wont get any more discount on the car (although no harm in asking).

I have just bought another plate for my Yeti which the dealer is happy to put on for me.

if you want to keep the plate when you sell the car its costs £80 re reg fee and the dvla issue you with another reg appropriate to the year of the car.

a private reg makes the car distinctive, hey and no one knows how old it is.

cheers, dave

Does it keep the original numbers as a ghost number when on private plates?

Yes. I have took the personal plate off my Superb and paid a retention fee to hold it for three years.

Was re-issued the original registration number for which I had kept the plates.

Will probably put the personal plate on the new Yeti again when the novelty of showing of a new car to the neighbours has worn off!!!!

I have of course the personal number plate taken off the Superb.

I bought my registration direct from DVLA (£240 including the £80 transfer fee). I handed the V750 to James at Allams and he then sorted out the plate so my registration was on it when I picked the SM up. I was charged £55 for the initial registration. I hadn't thought about this before but I don't know if this goes to DVLA or towards the cost of the actual number plates. Not worried either way though as long as James keeps supplying coffee and biscuits when I visit... emoticon-0144-nod.gif

It does vary - some do it for nothing whereas others charge. Worth asking when you take out a policy. When I put a private plate on the Fabia I was charged a £25 admin fee (Highway Insurance via Brentacre)

thats odd, the £55 registration is normally included in the price of the car, its listed as a specific item on my invoice.

Did they charge you an extra £55 on top of the price of the car?

In theory you have paid it twice as the reg plate includes the £80 standard transfer fee so the dealer should not need to pay the £55.

I'll have to check that with dvla as they have changed the V750 form since last time I did it.

jeez, nothing is ever simple. :S

The £55 was listed as a specific item on the invoice and included in the OTR price of the car.
