SHOCK HORROR!

Are Skoda standards going down the toilet?

I had my YETI into the dealers yesterday to investigate DELAMINATION of the alloy wheel centre caps . I had noticed blistering on one of them which looked a bit milky round the circumference and the bubbles popped as you ran your finger over it. A bit worrying after only a month and a mere 1000 mls driven!

The mechanic came out to investigate and informed me it was protective film that should have been removed during PDI !

In this connection I asked him about the protective film that some have reported on their rear door/ wheel arches. He said this is put on at the factory for protection during delivery transport and should also be removed as part of the PDI. maybe that's why some cars have it and some don't. In other words it's down to whoever does the prepping. I said he could leave the film on the centre caps but he thought it best to take it off so I didn't argue.

My car doesn't seem to have any stone chip damage to the rear doors as some have reported. Maybe it's to do with where you drive as mine is all on made up roads. This doesn't excuse or justify chips picked up from rough tracks though, after all it's a 4x4 designed for going off piste.

Finally I'd like to redress the balance by retracting my opening criticism of Skoda standards.... I would recommend the both the quality and longevity of their protective film without hesitation !!!!!!!

Talking about delaminating. I owned an Audi 80 some years ago. The laquer on the roof "delaminated" and let water in. the result was a roof that grew great white fungus shaped blobs when it rained. NASTY and an Audi too!

I think people forget that even the original Golf was prone to a bit of rust.

Actually on the subject of such, when was the last time you that you spotted a rusty car (assuming the car was reasonably well cared for). I have seen a few 10 year old 'scrappers' that still had pretty clean bodywork and only the wheels and faded rear lenses betrayed their age. My Strada Abarth had to have the rear hatch replaced at 3 years old, as it had rotted so badly!

Obviously not seen many Mk3 Golf's

My now 11 year old Octy is still rust free despite living outside all the time. It has got some moss around the rear mud flaps.....

I dropped one of my kids off this morning and there was a 04 LDV minibus there, the front wheel arches where nearly gone, it was so rusty.

The film on the rear doors of my Monster is defiantly not transport protection but the proper stone protection stuff and as previously mentioned seen the same thing on other early cars including the CZ demo. So could be dealers are removing it thinking it's for transportation protection.

She did arrive with a lot of white plastic film over most of the upper body work with lumps of blue foam at each corner.

If anyone from Skoda UK reads this forum can they please send a bulletin around dealers to inform these numpties not to remove the stone chip protection. As TP says this is not simple transport protection but a proper stone chip guard that can be found on many makes of car.

I was in my local Skoda dealership yesterday - I found protective film fitted on only one model and it wasn't the Yeti.

It was on the Octavia and the film was located on the rear wheel arch near to the bottom of the rear passenger door. The film was not obvious unless you were specifically looking for it. It's definately something I would like to see on my Yeti when I get it.

It is something that I have had on previous cars and looks as though it would be pretty hard to remove without some serious glue remover being applied. Not on my new paintwork thank you very much.......
