flipping sims 2

Just installed the sims2 (dont ask) and it doesnt work! Even tho my pc is withing the min spec, by a long way in some departments, the game is having problems.

Tried the EA site which is shabby. Wondered if anyone here has any ideas?

It loads up fine, initial menu is fine, start to load a new game ok, then when the game startes the screen/graphics turn to poo - all flashing and flickering and stuff - tottaly uinusable.

I have...

1. defraged the drive.

2. re instaled direct X 9.0c

3. Installed latest video drivers.

4. Struggles thru the game to lower all gfx settings to their minimum.

5. shut down all other apps & processes, forewall, virus the lot. It had my PC to itself!

6. Emailed the EA techno nerds for help (No reply yet)

7. Uninstalled it and given up. May reinstall it to see if that sorts it.

8. asked you lot :D

Now normally I would take it back to WH Smiths and get a refund, however I know Game have stoped refunding for PC games under their '10 day' scheme and suspect WH smiths are the same - am I stuck with it? Can I demand money back?

I have seen similar issues with Sims 2 when viewing other pc forum sites. Try searching with Google, I know there is a problem with Sims 2, just cant place it.

Runs OK on my machine - biggest problem was that the default resolution is something like 1280x1024 which when you've got a puny GForce2 like I have it 'struggles' to say the least!

In fact it still struggles when you go to the town overview even on the lowest res setting (1024x768??). I would expect it's down to the graphics card. What have you got?

You need a pretty serious PC to run it even at 1024 res. What's your graphics card?

My pc spec is...

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2000+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz

Graphics: Nvidia Geforce fx 5200 (138 Mb)

RAM: 1Gb PC2700/333 DDR

All of which should be fine - I can run doom3 and far cry etc with no bother at reasonable settings. WOuld expect sims 2 to be a breeze.

I could use a new proc tho. Been looking around for an XP 3000 or so to tide me over the 65 bit wars ;)

I have a 2gig P4, 9800 Pro and 512 RAM (PC2100)- Doom 3 runs well enough at high detail/1024 but with occasional choppiness with a lot on screen. The Sims 2 also runs well but still occasionally lags. I think my bottleneck is the RAM, but don't want to add any more because am looking to upgrade to AMD 64-bit CPU and faster RAM soon.

Your CPU is about the same as mine, RAM obviously much better so the FX 5200 is the weakest link!

If you were to upgrade, the ATI 9800 Pro was a bargain when I got mine a few months ago but hasn't really dropped in price since then. I think the Geforce 6600GT might be the one to go for now (~

It runs fine on my laptop. A bit slow at times, but the in built graphics card is not very powerful and relies on the rest to speed it up.

most games now i dout will run on minimum specs dispite what it says on the box !
