My Superbs done 125k miles - do i need to start looking for potential problems?

Featured Replies

i bought my 03 plate superb 1.9tdi a little over 6 months ago. I got it at 116k miles and now its on 125k..... looking to be around 140k miles by the time ive had it a year.

now, it only cost me £3k, and its so far had 4 new tyres (massive fail one day when all my tyres went flat!), new brakes and pads up front, cam belt done at 123k miles

without looking in the service book, im assuming this thing is on original everything...... original clutch, turbo, bearings, suspension, egr valve.... i will have a look in the book when i go home tonight. but im just wondering, if this is the case, and with the miles its done, do i need to be keeping an eye out for anything major?

the engines been serviced twice since ive had it and my mechanic says as long its done regular and on time, the engine will be bomb proof. the did have one of those dodgy ECU tricking chips on it for a while (previous owners addition) but i removed it owing to poor fuel consumption. i hope that its not stressed some of the parts out.

car still goes fine though, picks up alright once the turbo comes in just below 2000rpm, theres no odd/overly harsh engine vibrations so i guess the DMF (if i has one) is ok, the gear box is fine, the brakes are fine, steering is fine, HVAC fine, no warning lights and its getting around 45mpg average. so its seemings pretty faultless at the moment..... im just hoping its not the calm before the storm.

only problems really are one duff reversing sensor (easy fix) damaged in a car park <5mph bump probably, odd pieces of interior trim are looking a bit shabby and theres a few creaks n groans from the interior plastics but nothing you wouldnt expect of a car thats had a hard life.

i would say the clutch feels pretty wooly, but it also feels like that in my mates fabia.....so perhaps a skoda trait?, bite points not defined too well, but it seems to be biting about half way been the middle to the top of the pedal travel. clutch doesnt slip in any gear, unless you floor it on a particularly steep incline. i really want a new car , but its probably gonna be cheaper to keep this running....plus i love how its sprung by silent night mattresses at each corner.

Sounds like it's running well. I wouldn't be particularly worried about anything if I were you, just keep it regularly serviced.

Get the alternator pulley changed at the next service without fail - you are on borrowed time with this and when it fails, it causes other damage.

Keep a sharp eye on the CV joint boots as they have now run their course. If you spot a split one before dirt and water gets into the joint, repair is cheap.

The front suspension will be coming up for rebuild time. Unless they have been taken out and greased (my recommendation), soak the upper joints' pinch bolt in plus gas and try to get it free. The same applies to the track rod end pinch bolt. If you leave it until you absolutely have to shift it, it will be too late.

Read all about plenum chamber bungs and pollen filter seals - then do what's needed.

I've just driven a diesel Passat with 250k miles on the original clutch. It didn't feel wonderful but it still worked...

where do i look for the CV joints?

i think the pulley may have been done along with the cam belt, ill check the service reciept to see what he did. might of just been the belt.

where can i read up on the plenum and filters? on here i guess?

At each end of the drive shafts.

The alternator pulley would not of been changed with the cambelt change - doesn't mean it hasn't been done, but it's unlikely.

After recently experiencing the water ingress problem 'we' have put together a thread that has been pinned which includes Gizmo's guide:

I am currently on 170k and all I would say is make sure it's regularly 'lube' serviced and unless you drive it like you stole it you will be fine............

im a pretty easy driver, it does mostly 70mph motorway stuff, nothing heavy. the cars character really makes you quite calm at the wheel, you never really get the urge to hoon it....not that you can much because in standard trim the 1.9tdi (130) is just about enough to give the car acceptable speed.

shes been serviced regular, been done 2 times in 6 months since ive had it.

i checked the service book and other than belts, oil filters, air filters etc, brakes and brake pads it would appear everything else is original.... original clutch, pulleys, etc....most of the dealers its been serviced at were kind enough to write additional notes all over the service book about what had been done besides the standard service.

ill check the CV joints tonight, i wasnt quite sure what they were....but i did have a hunch they'd be on the drive shafts where the wheels are. the poor full lock on the car does make getting in there to look a bit of a hassle though.

thats my one major gripe with this car...... its very long, sometimes its a 37 point turn to get out of the work car park!
