vRS - new possible owner - advice needed

Featured Replies

Got a new Subaru Impreza Turbo 10 years ago - and have loved every single moment with it - it has not put a foot wrong .... and, of course, everyone moves out the way if an Impreza is up your rear end!

I don't

In fact, get that close to my rear end and you'll find my foot comes off the throttle very slowly... Especially if there are people in the middle/inside lanes so you can't nip up the inside, amazing how long it can take to overtake the car on the lane inside you :)

I drive somewhere between 25-30,000 miles a year and arrogant tw@ts that try and tailgate you out of the way are one of my real bug bears

Oooooops, I seem to have hit a nerve .... I need to re-phrase what I meant.

When I drive down the outside of a dual-carraigeway or motorway cars move into the slower lane for me to proceed at the pace I choose - nothing arrogant about it at all.

But - and I really noticed it - in the PrimeraGT no-one would move over (not until I flashed) and I don't want to have to do that all the time, again.

And I suspect that when a Skoda comes along the car in front will choose not to move aside?

Maybe you don't worry about cars stuck in front of you - but it's something which does annoy me.

Yes, I know I'm old and should know better - maybe a Octavia vRS will calm me down? It's about time I acted my age I guess!!

I'm going to take one out this week and put in some dual-carraigeway driving.

As an aside, are they good Towcars?

Thanks again for your replies, sorry if you misunderstood what I meant - I'm not trying to be arrogant, I just know what will annoy me so I'm asking the people who actually drive them to see what's what on that score.

Maybe my reply was a little strongly worded... But if I am in the outside lane overtaking the rest of the traffic, people who tailgate me as if it's going to make me go faster really annoy me and I got the impression that's what you meant by "people move out of the way"... I am not a slow driver (12 points in the last 5 years testifies to that) but I am also not reckless (all but 3 points on empty motorways) and being flashed or tailgated by someone when I am already overtaking slower traffic is really quite annoying... As are, I have to admit, the drivers who feel that as they are doing 70mph, they can sit in whatever lane they feel like when the inside lane(s) are empty.

Like I said, I drive 25-30K a year and am continuously annoyed by other drivers... I strongly suspect I annoy many people too, but I do at least use my mirrors and move to the left when it's clear

However, it doesn't seem to matter what car you drive these days, people will either move out of the way (they actually use theirs mirrors or have the road sense to move back to the left) or they won't (either completely ignorant of your presence as they don't use their mirrors, or stupid enough to feel that as they are already at the speed limit they are somehow promoting road safety by refusing to let you speed past, neither type of driver should be on the road)

The facelift vRS is actually fairly imposing in the mirrors, I've had several friends and colleagues say as much, although obviously not as imposing as a fully body kitted rally replica (but I still had the issue of people not moving back to the left when in an Integrale which wasn't the subtlest of cars either) so as far as I'm concerned, the vRS is no better or worse than other cars for that, but the real issue is driving standards rather than the cars themselves

Take it for a test drive and see what you think. With regards to it being a decent towcar, I have no idea, I don't tow so it's not something I've ever looked at. At the end of the day, it should have the power and the torque to tow, but I assume there's a weight limit on what it can tow safely due to the weight of the car itself....

Regarding other cars moving out of the way: I drove up to north wales to see my folks over the weekend - with the kiddies in the car i was sticking to the speed limits (cruise most of the way).

My vrs is white and i currently have a set of factory roof bars on it. You would not believe the number of cars that either jumped out of my way when I came up behind them or slammed on the brakes having been blasting up behind me.. seems that the car looks a lot like some of the unmarked vrs's that North Wales police are currently using.. made me smile :D

Raglits - your words, "The facelift vRS is actually fairly imposing in the mirrors, I've had several friends and colleagues say as much, although obviously not as imposing as a fully body kitted rally replica" are perfect for what I was trying to say .... I like to drive an imposing car.

I am a bit concerned that I may like the vRS a bit too much, in all honesty - because it doesn't 'look' like the type of imposing car I like to own ... but I cannot argue against a £15k OTR price!

I'm slowly finding out about them - the vRS was facelifted in 2009 ... and it certainly looks less like a TaxiCab from the front now. The idea that it could be an unmarked Police car is interesting! Could have some fun with that thought :giggle:

Get the white one then. It's quite amusing seeing rep mobiles slamming the anchors on when they see a white vRS... I've even noticed some being wary around mine (as I'm often in shirt and tie at the wheel of a car known to be used as unmarked cars) :giggle:

I'm happy with my Race Blue one, I wanted an all rounder, a car comfortable enough to spend hours motoring up and down the country in, but quick enough to have some fun when the mood takes me. My mileage pretty much dictated getting the diesel, but if I did less miles I'd have got the petrol... All depends on what you're looking for

Sorry, was my post completely ignored?

:D

it screams: get out of the way, or receive the wrath of cornettos (decided that it wouldn't just be scouts)

:)

Who said that? :giggle:

Hi MrRee,

Like most of the other members have been saying, the Ocatvia is a good car, VW/Audi build quality and equipment but at a much more reasonable price, if you want to get one for which other people give way then I would get a Candy White vRS with zenon headlights, my local dealer had one as a demonstrator and he said that the combination of a white Octavia with the flashing blue tint to the headlights meant that people just dived out of the way all the time. You will enjoy!!

Thanks all ..... not sure the size of the vRS would carry off a White colour? But I can see that. with a couple of half hidden (unconnected) blue lights behind the grill a lot of fun can be had!!

Now, is the lastest 2009 version a Octavia III ?

No, the "latest" version which came out last year is a facelift of the Octavia II. The interior was upgraded early 2009 (I think) and the exterior changed a few months later.

The white one actually looks bloody good, and I'm not generally a fan of white cars... I wasn't brave enough to order the yellow but I do like the look of it (although if I'd have ordered either of those colours, the wheels would be black within days of getting the car...)

Right, so if I bought new I would be getting a facelifted interior and exterior vRS.

What are the differences?, as a secondhand vRS is an option ... but will be pre-facelift. Would a secondhand 2007 at £10,000 be worthwhile if new they are £15,200? I do wonder ....

the fl has different rear lights and a new front with different wings, lights with LED running lights and bumper. Inside the instruments and radio is new with the jumbo box with connection for ipod. It also has a different steering wheel and gear knob which some owners don`t like < Wheel less sporty , chrome rather than aluminum on gear knob> . Always loved the wrx but not the way it looks, although new one better. There is something to be said for having a Q car, you can surprise a lot of people. Love mine to bits get one and ANY doubts you had will evaporate.
