Removing rear bumper trim + oil question

Featured Replies

Afternoon folks,

Just a quick question as the search doesn't seem to be throwing anything up. How does the rear bumper trim (the black plastic bit that runs around the bumper and just below the boot lip) come off? Is it a case of removing the bumper and undoing it from the inside, or are they held on with poppers?

Also, I am intending to change my Octy 110tdi to fixed servicing rather than variable as I'm not happy with the intervals really. Can I simply just use the normal fixed interval oil (fully synthetic IIRC - will have to check the book) or will there be some issues as the engine has done all of it's life so far on variable servicing (therefore I assume on the rather pricey/special longlife oil)?

Cheers. :)

it just pulls off buddy in 10 seconds lol

Plastic trim just pulls off, I pulled mine off when I fitted a towbar, as I needed to remove the bumper and rear crash bar.

To switch to fixed servicing, you just do the service, and reset the interval via the odometer button on the dash (iirc) - check the owners manual. When you service on variable you need to use vag-com to reset, but that isn't the case for fixed.

In the long run, the LL oil, per mile used in the engine is probably cheaper - if you get the full interval between changes.

Cheers. What I was referring to is do I have to continue to use LL oil as the engine is "used to it", or can I just switch the oil type to what would be used with fixed interval servicing?

Cheers

Pretty sure you can just switch to the lesser oil and fixed servicing. My TDi likes to have a quick drink of my LL oil (generally about a litre in every 30k of miles), using 5w30 fully sync vw-spec fuchs stuff.

When I bought mine I just started sevicing it 'properly' straight away! 10k or once a year, which ever comes first.

I'm using Castrol Edge 5W-30, which being suitable for 20k intervals is obviously more than good enough for 10k changes. It's a bit expensive, but you have the security of knowing your using the best oil, and if you're lazy you can drag out the oil changes if you have to.

Fixed or variable is just dealers jargon for normal or lazy!

Change the oil as often as you can I say. If I did a lot of short town trips then I'd probably want to half the change period.
