18057 Powetrain databus: Missing message from ABS Controller P1649 - 35 -10 --- Intermittent

could it be a knackered ABS controller?

Certainly could, and it's part of the ABS unit. Get professional advice, as they cost a packet.

just got back from speaking to an indipendant pro..common fault in the ABS ECU where the circuit board (i think thats what he meant) is bent in the ECU and it causes fractures over time.

he suggested these guys http://www.ecu-repairs.com/abs-ecus/ who charge £99 and have a 3 day turnaround..

just gotta hope the ECU isnt too much of a pain to get to

How brave are you feeling? If you've never done any board building, this will seem outrageous. It's a technique used all the time.

If you suspect fractured solder joints (common) on a single sided PCB, google for "reflow solder at home" or something like that. Read up and figure out if it's something you're happy to do. Ignore any tutorials that use your kitchen oven, stick with the frying pan / hotplate method.

It boils down to heating a dry frying pan over the gas for a few mins till it's toasty. Turn the flame off, leave to sit for ~1min. Pop the board in the pan, leave until cool to the touch and don't disturb until then.

The heat causes the solder to reflow (melt) and gravity holds the components pressing down onto the board. The solder reflows to fill gaps between components / pads. As it cools, the solder hardens in its new position minus the previously dry joints.
