Twittering sqeak from engine

Featured Replies

Hello,

I thought I had already placed this question on here a few days back but having looked all over the place I cant find my post, so I am reposting the question.

I have an 04 octy 1.9TD late last year I was waiting in traffic and I noticed a sort of twittering sound, thinking to myself that sounds like someone has a slightly slipping alternator belt, I suddenly realised that someone was me, it eventually dissapeared and to be honest I totally forgot about it.

A few days later I was again made aware of it and I took the car to a local tyre/battery/ general repair emporium and asked if they would put a new belt on for me. This was duly carried iut and the sound went but returned a few days later but nothing like as noisy, in fact I had to listen quite carefully to hear it. I wondered if the problem was a faulty tensioner but have done nothing about it as the noise goes after about 15mins.

Im not conviced though, I originally assumed the noise would stop as eventually the battery gets topped back up after starting and as there is less load the slippage goes, I still think this is sound but I have just thought about other possibliities.

Could this noise be from some other component, like the water pump? (car nearing 50.000) What are the symptoms, water coolant leak(nothing as far as I can see) or could this noise be the pump just wearing out?

As mentioned earlier the noise (never something easy to describe) sounds a bit like a bird twittering, or I suppose a turning spindle that needs a drop of oil on it. It certainly is not that howeling that a really loose bdrive belt makes.

The car is having its 6th service next week. So any thoughts?? Thanks

I had a similar squeak on my 110 octavia which started quietly for a while but then got worse all of a sudden, new tensioner, alternator, idler and belt (and £400) sorted it.

Mine was making a sort of tinkly twittering sound and I tried to find it under the bonnet, but realied that it was coming from under the car, more or less under the gear lever. I found hat if I pushed the exhaust tailpipes to one side or other I could stop the noise, but it returned when I let the pressure back off.

Whilst I was doing some other work underneath I sprayed the rubber bush in the dog-bone mount with some white lithium grease and the noise has not come back so far, so I guess that this was the culprit.
