DRONING NOISE

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Is there anyone who can give me advice on a problem i've got with my octavia 1.9tdi 2001.

For some time now there has been droning sound coming from the front of the car and a shaky steering wheel.

The droning sound is there whether the car is in gear or not.

I've had both wheels off and had a good look round and everything looks fine.

I was told that it was more than likely to be the wheel bearings which were changed however, it made no difference when i took the car back on the road.

Also the track rod ends were changed at the same time as the bearings.

Somebody, has told me that there is a main bearing that is situated where the driveshaft goes into the gearbox and that it is a major job as the bearing is tapered meaning it has to be changed from the inside of the gearbox housing.

Can anyone give me any more info on this as i'm wondering whether to get the problem sorted or just leave it.

THANKS

It's not the wife is it?

Tyres?

See if your dealer can put a temporary set of wheels and tyres on the car (borrowed of a demo or something) then try that - see if the noise goes.

If you don't have directional tyres on, try swapping the 2 fronts fron side to side.

Droning noise, hmm . . . . Have you tried putting a petrol engine in it?

More seriously though the tyres would be my first suspect and even if they are directional you could swap the fronts and rears on each side.

Might get more answers in the Octy 1 forum

Any chance one of the balance weights has fallen off a front wheel - if it only happens while rolling at speed this might be the reason for the shake in the steering wheel...

Binding brake / s?
