How is your economy? My car has just covered 2.000km and the economy says +19km/l (+54mpg). Thats very fine, but will the economy be better as the car gets older? What does the "real life experience" say?

My 2001 Estate - 30,000 miles gives from ~56 mpg for a fast 100+ mile motorway run up to 70 mpg for a 10 mile amble thru open countryside on a warm day.

When I traded mine in at 53,000 miles, I was getting up to 71 mpg on a summer's A-road run, and reliably 60+ mpg around town.

Err.. i dont get that much, but i do have 30+ bhp more, and a heavy right foot

Ummmm.... OK - should I be worried? Mine has always been around the 60 ish mark, but recently this has been degrading and I'm lucky to get 50 now. I'm doing the same types of journey, similar speeds etc, and I'm not thrashing the car or anything but I didn't notice this last winter.....

Any ideas?

My wife's Fabia PD100 usually gets used for short trips around town on a cold engine and it does around 46mpg.

If I use it to go to work in, which is a 10 mile A and B road run, I can get it up to around 65mpg.

Mine has just clicked passed 20,000 miles. 4 mile commute to work, i get about 52. On a run, 65+. Last 2000 miles avarage was 55mpg (90% to and from work, cold engine).

I am interested to know if the figures quoted are actual MPG or simply what the computer indicates? For what it's worth my Fabby has averaged 59.8 mpg overall from new over 17k miles. That's actual mpg as I record every drop of derv that I put in the tank. I don't use it for short trips much, so maybe that's a reason for what I regard as excellent consumption. Faults to date - a new turbo just recently; front bumper a slightly different colour from new, a small water leak into the passenger footwell from the door seals.

I found the Fabia's fuel computer very acurate, probably reads about 3% above actual consumption. The Octavia's reads about 8% above actual economy when standard and 20% high with the tuning box on.

Over the first tree tanks (topped up....) I have measured the accuracy of the computer to be app. 1 %. In my former Octavia 90hp the computer was accurate within app. 8 % and 20 % with a box. I am not sure if the box will harm the accuracy of the computer on the Fabia. If so, I will adjust the computer with VAGCOM.

According to my Trip (2) readings, pre tuning box, I was getting 46/47mpg (but not sure when it was last reset) and after fitting my tuning box it is currently reading 57mpg. Car is regularly driven hard on a 50 mile round trip commute taking in fast A-roads and motorways Actual mpg at the pump seems to be closer to 50mpg however, although that might be my inaccurate fueling technique

Yes, the Fabia is surely a great car. After having an Octavia RS and an Octavia 90hp TDi I think that the Fabia is just as good and in some ways better. At 100mph the Octavia RS makes much more noise than the Fabia 100hp TDi. What does "51 reg" means? Haven't heard of that term in Denmark. My Fabia is a 2005-model registred 1. november 2004.

Regarding the economy: At the moment the temperature is below 0 degrees celcius here in Denmark. I can see that such temperatures has a lot to say. My car use 15 km before it is hot and therefore the first 15 km are with a pretty bad economy. If it's just 5 degrees is not nearly as bad.

The UK car registration system was changed in 2001 so that each car registered would have an age identifier, for example XY51 ABC

XY shows where the vehicle was registered, 51 indicates the age of the vehicle, and ABC is a unique identifier. There are two registration periods a year, September and March. So 51 means that the car was registered between 1st Sept. 01 and 28th Feb. 02. Your car would be 54 registered in this country (between 1st Sep. 04 and 28th Feb 05).A car registered between March and end of August will show the actual year- 01,02, 03, 04 etc. I think the "5" is really meant to depict an "S" (for registrations in the period commencing September of each year.

Phew! Thats probably as clear as mud, but it's the best I can do.

I agree, the Octavia makes much more wind, road and engine noise than the Fabia. The Fabia PD100 at 80mph is as quiet as my old V6 Rover 75.

As for 51 reg, it's the new UK mainland registration system. 51 refers to a car registered between September 2001 and March 2002. From March 2002 to September 2002 you get an 02 registration and then from September 2002 to March 2003 a 52 reg, and so on.

It's strange about the cars. When I had the Octavia RS is newer drove 140km/h due to the windnoise. In the Octavia TDi I didn't drove 140km/h due to the economy. The Fabia is the best "140km/h-car"

The number market in the UK is very expensive if you want a special numberplate.
