Squeaking brakes

Featured Replies

hi , can someone please help out there ?? i have a vrs 04 plate, there has been a squeeking noise coming from my driver side wheel, wasnt sure what it was at first. changed anti roll bar and bushes. i also changed the bearings. i decided to grease the pads today as this seemed to make it go away on a previous occassion. looking closely at the calliper i now know that the calliper is scrapping against the disk. there is not enought clearance between the disk and the calliper and they are grinding together causing a horrible noise and abnormal wear on the disks. the callipers are pressed against the disk where there should be a few mil gap like the passenger side, it is shredding the disk and sounds really bad

If everything else is bolted on correctly and torqued up, I suspect either the disc is warped or the incorrect dimensions/size.

you mention "bearings" which ones? front wheel bearings ?

the side thats rubbing could have a bearing incorrectly fitted

another thought, is the disc correct ?

I have the same problem had it now for a week and don't know what's up with it?

When I look at my disks I can see a clear line going round my disk which ovb something it leaning or scraping against it. I hope my warrenty will cover it as I have no money just now to fix it!

The noise is horrible almost a kinda scrape/ drone and I know it's deffo not the bearings as I had mine done at skoda not that long ago would have coilovers have any effect on it?

had the same problem with my 05 plate vrs for about 1.5 years now maybe a bit longer. Got used to it! lol

its been to skoda a couple of times and to other garages and no one can find the problem.

bit like a grinding/squeeling noise, more so round some corners.

doesn't always happen, it tends to pick its moments to squeel!

Dunc

Well I need to get it sorted its doing my head in! Don't know if replacing the disks and pads allround will help?

just developed the same problem after owning the car for a week! good job i have 12 months warranty, had a look at the rear discs today and they are SHOCKING, and were definately not like that when i bought it. You cant warp a couple of discs in a week surely lol! somethings definately wrong with it :( cant wait to get it sorted!

Is yours on coilovers?

no mate completely standard.

well today, went to have my new rear discs on (under warranty from where i bought it) asked them about the squeek and they couldnt see any reason why it was doing it and changed the rear discs and pads anyways.

driving home all was fine, no noise at all.

took it out again later, and still the same noise coming from the rears :(

does anyone know what the hell is goin on?

You considered originally that the rear discs might have ended up being warped after you had owned the car for a couple of weeks, the rear brakes really do not get asked to do much work, so I'd reckon that they were not warped, but they do end up, due to uder use, getting a bit rusted up - so that might be why they got replaced when you complained about them. One other thing, was this a VAG main dealer how did this work or not? If it was not a VAG main dealer, then maybe they just replaced the discs and pads and did not wind back the pistons fully - or you are suffering from the "normal" problem where the handbrake levers are not returning back to their stops when you release the hand brake - there is an internal return device inside the calliper but quite a few people have discovered that its best to fit external return springs - best ones are from a Sharan - or if you have warranty get the calliper(s) changed as they are not working correctly if this is the cause of your squeaking rear brakes.

Mine have squeaked from new. Dealer has cleaned and regreased on several occasions but it comes back every time. Not a big problem but can be irritating sometimes - tends to improve after a long run. Maybe the dust gets blown out at higher speeds????

Warranty expired last month so I'll live with it for now icon_rolleyes.gif
