Towbar electrics

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2008 Octavia L&K Estate with the skoda towbar and 13 pin electrics fitted.

Should there be an audible or visual warning when the trailer is connected and the indicators are operating? At the moment I have none. I have also noticed that when I am in reverse the parking sensors still beep - I'm sure I read somewhere that with the Skoda electrics this was cut out when the trailer was connected?

Is this all controlled by VAGCOM or is there a fuse or relay somewhere which may be at fault?

Thanks

Tom

Yes it should have EITHER an audible or visual warning, its the law.

The parking sensors *should* recognise the towbar if wired correctly.

Im presuming the towbar is wired to current standards, as is the van or trailer your towing. Wiring changed in 1998 so lots of cars have issues with pre 98 stuff.

Get the audible/visual warning sorted.

You will get a bulb failure mesage on your maxidot .

As said the VAG way is to show the loss of indicator the same way as a car indicator ie, high speed flash. Hence you do not get a visible signal or sound.

The downside in my view with this is you do not get information if the trailer is not plugged in, but hey ho.

As for the reversing sensors I believe there is a code change to do when installed.

My parking sensors still worked to start with, but dealer recoded it so they now switch off.

Thanks guys, sounds like a trip to the dealer.

The lights etc on both my trailers work correctly and are post 98 so no issues there, but don't even get a bulb warning on the maxidot.

I'll ask them to investigate on next service, just a bit of a pain not knowing if my indicators are working or not.

Tom

You won't get a signal to say if they are working.

Youl will have high speeding flashing of the indicator system if any bulb is out, including the trailor if it is connected.

:S I did a test when my caravan was connected up and took out the bulbs one at a time with the rear caravan lights, you will get a bulb failure light on the dash, if you take out a low wattage bulb say on the number plates it didn't register it blown as its such a small current. hope that helps - Stuart
