PD130 Top end

second that of what devonutopia says its got to be good stuff, if the dealers use it

Yup, I can't see TPS (VW) supplying the wrong oil ;):)

I also forgot to mention that at times it sounds rather tappety, but as of lately its behaved its self.

Usually a hoon down the motorway can cause it to start tapping quiet loudly whilst being parked up. Allowing it to idle for a while it gradually quietens down.

Tappet rattling when starting or cold engine, is usually down to infrequent oil changes or non PD oil being used.

As for Moggies worries about top end wear, I have never heard of this kind of problem, nor bottom end or middle end issues. I think he is getting worried during his retirement years. Beginning to sound like my mum.

Im afraid it sometimes still does it when its warm soot1e. A good blast down the motorway can sometimes cause it to start tapping too.

I've moved the car from 20k services down to 10k.

We've replaced a few cams, followers etc which have shown signs of wear.

Some cars present problems such as misfires. Some were caught early and had parts replaced..

Definitely always use the correct oil frequently! An unfortunate problem with the thinner cam lobes.

Always serviced mine with the highest spec oil every 10k which is usually at least twice a year...

I was concerned that my local Skoda dealer say they don't have/get PD 505.01 oil anymore and they use the apparently Skoda recommended Shell Helix VX 5w-30 which says 504 and 507. I trusted them, but the engine sounds a bit noisier. Are many dealers saying this, or are they wrong?

20k miles does seem a bit too long to me, do an oil change asap then again in a couple of thousand miles. Once you've flushed out the valvegear of dirt the noise should go.

It is on 10k changes now, it would probably benefit from a more frequent change but thats rather expensive.

Does anyone know of any engine flush oil (not the additive) that is approved by VAG.

As to not do any damage to the camshaft and followers?

I believe 507.00 replaces the previous spec 505.01. Opie Oils now suggest this oil for the PD engines.

AFAIK, the only safe way to flush is use the same oil, just run a fair amount through. I think!
