Umwelt Plakette

Featured Replies

Anyone know how the Umwelt Plakettes (green zone badges) for German green zones are categorised?

The web site asays that they are categorised based on small particulate emissions and it also lists categories from 1-5 which i assume are the same as Euro 1-5. .

Currently these are issued as Red/Yellow/Green - anyone know what colour would be issued to a 2008 Octavia hatch 1.9TDI ?

Should be Green as long as its euro 4 compliant...i think but green for sure. I would not worry to much unless you live in Germany of course??

UK reg car (not BFG etc) any fine you get wont come back to you and they dont really have any way to get you to pay once you are back in UK..Of course if you get clamped its different.

Spent alot of time in Germany with out the stickers and have never been fined yet. German gov tend to rely on Germans being very law abiding, that system would never work in UK with out a network of cams like London has...

You only need the sticker in a small amount of German cities. I got the sticker, but did not put it on my car yet. I will use it when needed. It is annoyingly big and ugly.

Yes Koln, Berlin etc, In and out of Koln often over time. Not sure if they have changed the system of getting them but when they first came about it was a bit like the bottle Pfund in that they had not thought it over and places like Berlin had a lot of tourists coming in at all hours 7 days a week and you could only get them certain times of day etc. They got a lot of stick so i guess they may have chaged the system a bit since i was last over?

I have a Umwelt Plakette on the screen of my SEAT Toledo as I have been out in Germany a few times this year.

You need it for a lot of the major cities now - mine is green and has a large No. 4 on it, with my reg no. - it is a self destruct type, so needs to be renewed if the windscreen is changed.

From what I remember, soon you will only be able to drive into these cities if you have a Euro 4 sticker.

Correct Berlin has already banned all non euro 4 cars. Bit of a bummer as it knackers all the classic car people as they cannot go into the city centre now. I think its a bit unfair as these guys only take the cars out twice a yr or so and given the lack of use give less Co2 than a euro 4 car over a whole years use for example.

Wife wants to go back to Karlsruhr, and we may visit Stuttgart.

Can get it onlne for 30 ish Euro but beginning to look like parking in the suburbs and getting a train/tram into the centre!

Now if it has your reg number on why does it need to self destruct if you peel it off, I can understand it for a Swiss autoroute carnet but this? May be related to the issue of badges being done by a private company!
