Sump plug loose, easy to replace sump diy ?

Featured Replies

I went to service my fabia vrs this weekend and found the sump plug very tight and would not unscrew without some force.

You can guessed what happened next... sump plug goes round and round and will not come out!

Spoke to the colchester skoda garage who last serviced it.. told them it had been put on too tight, they say they never have had any sump problems from their servicing , typical.

So it looks like i need a new sump, question is how easy is it to replace?

I can change oil and do a service but have never attempted a sump replacement before.. is it easy?

I have found a new sump from europarts for £60 but a local garage wanted £150 to fit it!

On the PD130 Passat you had to drop the subframe - a pig of a job DIY (although I did manage it). I'm assuming the same is the case with the Fabia.

I'd helicoil the sump plug tbh.

Buy a vacuum pump and leave it in.

sadly i cannot leave it in... its slowly leaking oil :(

Since it's going round and round I wonder if it's one of those type of sumps with a nut spot welded on the back (rather than being threaded). If this is the case then it's just a case of draining the oil an alternate way (pela pump type thing), taking the sump off, then getting someone to weld a new nut onto it.

I don't think the issue here is the cost of a replacement sump, rather the potential cost of labour to do the work.

I can get hold of a sump, might go for a helicoil if i can find someone in colchester to do the work.

May get the sump fitted in a garage, just wanted to know how easy it was to fit a sump myself thats all.

shouldnt be a hard job as there isnt anything in the way when you drop it down

no, the thread is in the actual alloy of the sump

helicoil will be the cheapest option, but you still need to get the spinning sump plug out, which wont be easy unfortunetely

£150 to fit a sump is way too much, tops it would take an hour to do, there is no actual gasket, just sealant

Most of the bolts that hold the sump on are easy to get at however there IIRC 3 bolts alongside the gearbox that are a pig to get to. If you have or can borrow allen keys that have a small ball end (no smart comments PLEASE!) this allows the to use the allen key at an angle which in turns makes it easier to remove the bolts.

I would say trying to do this on the ground would make the job all the more difficult, my advice is shop around for fitting cost. I got mine done less than 45 mins to do the job. remember to let the sealant dry before re-filling with oil.

Thanks for the advice everyone, think ill leave it to a garage, sounds its not as straightforward as i thought.

  • 2 months later...

I now have a cut-off spark plus as my sump plug!

Only an hour to change on fabia. We'd charge £52...

£150 is a bit steep!

Ooo this is an old thread.

I got it sorted in the end by a vw garage who had one spare, supplied and fitted at a very good price.

Now if only i could find a cheap place to uprate my brakes to 312mm....

Oh yeh, glad you gotit sorted then.

Hows things Soot1e, your 2nd track car almost ready?

It's ready but failed the MOT on a cracked windscreen. Was driving to the test when an old stone chip decided to advance into the swept area, probably caused by going over a couple off speed bumps. By the time it was tested the crack was too long and so failed. Ordered a new screen from Autoglass but can't be done until Tuesday. Might as well wait till the end of the month to tax it now.
