A question for the techy types..

Hi guys, slight issue which im hoping some of you can advise on.

I recently had some new tyres fitted, the balance was shockingly bad so had all four wheels rebalanced the next day after quite a long drive, had to be somewhere so wasn't able to stop and the problem sorted then. Since then im still gettting a slight vibration through the wheel and car at motorway speeds, the car is pulling to the left, and again at motorway speeds the steering is very 'floaty' and like there is quite abit of play there. I have had an alignment done but the problem still persists.

Could it be some sort of bush problem??

Thanks in advance for ideas.

:)

simple answer is...was it doin this b4 the new tyres were fitted?

Yes, what tyre make and model have you had fitted? All four changes, or just one axle? I'm presuming the make/model is at least consistent across each axle?

I'd start by making sure that the cold pressures are as manufacturer's recommendation on all 4 corners.

might sound silly but are the wheel bolts torqued up?

I found that if your nuts are loose (oo err missus) you get a clonk/vibration when you accelerate or brake.

Could just be the console bushes are kaput, new tyres tends to exaggerate the "disconnected" feeling

You need to work through this step by step...

Is there really a lot of play in the steering? If so, it isn't a tyre problem.

If the steering is light at motorway speeds are the pressures correct?

Is there any sign of wear on the new tyres? A slight scalloped appearance and the pulling to the left would suggest shock absorber problems.

Have you tried jacking up the car and checking for bearing wear; this could cause a pulling to one side and 'funny' feelings in the steering, especially with a rear bearing.

You had it balanced then aligned? Was the balance rechecked on all wheels? Try putting the spare on each wheel in turn to see if the problem changes.

Could it be a bush? Well yes for some symptoms, but a bush wouldn't normally give the vbration effect you describe on its own.

HTH & best of luck

sounds like it's been tracked up too much toe out the manual recomends 1 +-1mm toe in but this could be set at 0 toe in which case you would have the floaty feelings at 70 -80 as i did. when checked mine was set at .25mm toe out and cornering was a bitch one minute oversteer the next understeer. i would take it back and get themm to check it again

This happened to me last month.

I didnt have new tyres fitted, just tracking done. Same symtoms as you have mentioned plus my sterring wheel was not straight.

Went back a few days later and garage checked again, found that the tracking was out, 4 wheel alignment done again and now its all running well.

I would say you should go back to the garage for a re-check.
